President Trump said Friday that student loan borrowers will be able to suspend loan payments for 60 days amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump said during a White House briefing that interest on federally held loans would be "temporarily waived."

"Today, [Education] Secretary [Betsy] DeVos has instructed federal lenders to allow borrowers to suspend their student loans and loan payments without penalty for at least the next 60 days," Trump said. The president added that the time period could be extended depending on the state of the pandemic.

The Wall Street Journal said that public school districts can’t require assignments or issue grades during the furlough, because “equity.”

I knew this would happen. Every student will advance to next grade and every senior will graduate.

I'm not sure that will fly in NY. Graduation is contingent upon passing the Regents exams. Both my wife and daughter are teachers here and have been doing on-line instruction since Wednesday. Some of the students have been diligent; others have done nothing.

A "free pass" will harm students, not help them. They will be unprepared to do college level work (more so than usual). Even in the dark ages when I started at FSU in the fall of 1973, 1/3 of the students on my dorm floor did not return for Winter quarter after Christmas. This was when college was affordable. Now it will end up with students taking remedial courses which they pay for and do not count for graduation. Many will drop out somewhere along the path and still owe their student debt.

I get what you are saying but I think in a national emergency the governor will exempt regents. My mom had to take those back in the day. As far as college, you are right a lot don’t make it but in today’s coddled society, I wonder if it will make a difference. I think we’ll see 1,000 dollar checks for a year at least.
