Citing coronavirus, homeless families seize 12 vacant homes in Los Angeles
LA Times ^ | March 19, 2020 | Liam Dillon

A group of homeless and housing-insecure Angelenos seized more vacant, publicly owned homes in El Sereno on Wednesday, arguing that government officials have failed to provide the shelter that’s necessary for them to remain healthy during the coronavirus pandemic.

The occupation followed a similar takeover Saturday, when two families and a man moved into one of the neighborhood’s dozens of empty homes — all owned by Caltrans. The state agency bought them years ago as part of a now-failed plan to extend the 710 Freeway.

And during a disease outbreak, who is going to come and evict them?

[[housing-insecure Angelenos]]

Is this a new medical condition that requires massive government checks and free medicine to treat?

"...A group of homeless and housing-insecure Angelenos seized more vacant, publicly owned home..."

Well. I hadn't heard that term before. Isn't that special.

A bunch of abandoned houses with no service connections and a bunch of BUMS living in them? Yeah, that will slow the spread of the Chicom virus. /s

Who knew? The solution to our problem is lawlessness, filth, and squalor? /s

People couldn’t shoot trespassers in Dr. Zhivago.

Big difference.

Having had to repair properties damaged by renters-come-squatters, I can tell you if not for permits and fees it is often better to burn it down and start from scratch. These houses will be severely damaged. That’s just the way it is when people take stuff that isn’t theirs.

Here it costs about $500 and takes a month to 45 days to evict someone. If it were possible, I’d hire a biker gang and have them thrown over the back fence. But, like in the movie “Fargo” it’s hard to manage people like that.

I’m Ferrari insecure. Does that mean I can steal one with no consequences other than higher insurance rates?

Try Hilo, Hawaii. Absentee landlords plus lack of law enforcement. Plenty of free fruit hanging from trees. One house at 351 Ohai Street was a classic. Burned twice. The 2nd fire took it out completely.

Perfect outcome from the stupid Caltrans fiasco, which bought up entire neighborhoods and emptied them, further reducing housing stock.

Hell, give them the title and let them take responsibility for the property or sell it to someone who can.

This kind of nonsense is why I never got into rental property. In my state, landlords don't do a credit check. In my state, if someone can pass a credit check, they'll simply buy a house.

In my state, before a landlord rents out a property, he does a criminal background check.
