CDC: 80 percent of US coronavirus deaths are people 65 and older

Eighty percent of deaths associated with the coronavirus in the United States were in adults aged 65 and older, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “The risk for serious disease and death in COVID-19 cases among persons in the United States increases with age,” the CDC said. “Social distancing is recommended for all ages to slow the spread of the virus, protect the health care system, and help protect vulnerable older adults.”

The analysis looked at 44 cases from Feb. 12 through March 16 and found that 34 percent of deaths were reported among adults aged 85 and older. Forty-six percent of deaths were reported among those aged 65 to 84. Adults between the ages of 20 and 64 made up 20 percent of the deaths.

Public health officials and experts have warned for weeks that the elderly are at the highest risk of dying from the coronavirus. The analysis lined up with data released by China, which showed 80 percent of deaths there were in adults aged 60 and older.

CDC must be filled with affirmative action placeholders. The age percentage is much less useful than the percentage having pre-existing conditions. No need to quarantine healthy people just because they are over 65.

“if you have any kind of comorbidities your employer probably needs to let you WFH as an ADA accommodation”

Was never asked. I am pre diabetic, and have hyper tension, controlled. If I get it, I’m toast.

LMAO!!!

I wondered how long it would be until someone came up with that parody-the last parody of My Sharona was “Ayatolla” and came about during the hostage problems with Iran...

Not so. Take care of yourself and you will most likely be fine.

Hang in there, kid. :)

Not so. Hanks is diabetic and he seems to be doing ok, so far.

you should affirmatively raise it. just b/c you’re a browns fan doesn’t mean you have to live with disappointment in other areas of your life!

Ok.
As a physician I will henceforth not treat any millennial for anything in the future.

On your own snowflakes.

I’m almost there (64) and STILL think this about 75% panic-driven hysterical over-reaction.

I turn 64 in a couple of months. You and I are good to go for now, but it sounds like our doorknob-licking days are almost over.

I am turning 80 in a few short weeks, and have more energy now than at age 57 when I was forced to retire due to poor health. I couldn’t even mow my lawn at age 57. My poor wife had to do it. Now I can mow the entire lawn and do not even feel tired. And no more chest pains, no more hip joint pain, no more panic attacks in closed malls, no more border line diabetic.

The smartest thing I ever did in my life was to resign from the job, and take up walking 18-24 miles every week on the golf course. If I can do it, anybody can do it.

Based on the experience on the Diamond Princess, even if one is over age 50 and contracts the disease, one is STILL likely (>50%) to have asymptomatic disease.

Only on the age 80-89 group does it differ; in that group only about 45% were asymptomatic.

That’s a start, now tell us what underlying conditions they had as well...

It took them a long time to even give us this age related tidbit.

Why has it been difficult to give us a basic demographic breakdown of this disease?

Millenials, it's party time!
Bring Out Your Grandad

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

Who would hire them?

I work for myself-so able to work from home-I’m over 65 and I’m not leaving the rural area I live in-only going to the small local grocery store every couple of weeks-not exactly a crowded venue at any time, and the veggies and meat are organic and mostly locally grown/raised.

I don’t eat processed food or take drugs of any kind, and I do take plenty of supplements-but I’m still being careful-I don’t catch bugs as a rule, but no one is bullet proof-I prefer to stay in good health, so I’m using a lot of hand soap and Clorox wipes when handling anything from the outside world-and working at home, away from peop0le makes sense, even though it is going to start hurting my income within a couple of weeks...
