Dare County Is Closed To All Visitors

DARE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Dare County says it is keeping visitors out due to concerns with the coronavirus.

While the county says they have had no cases of the pandemic yet, they made the decision to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Checkpoints were set up at 2:00 p.m. at entry points into the county, and no visitors will be allowed.

Dare County says only permanent residents, non-resident property owners and non-resident employees of businesses within the county will be allowed.

Those with valid driver's license with a Dare or Currituck county address or a government-issued ID card with a local address will be allowed in the county.

Non-resident property owners can use a current tax bill, while non-resident employees can use a pay stub or an employee ID badge, all with a matching current government-issued ID.

The county also says visitors will not be able to use Dare County to access Corolla, Ocracoke Island or Tyrrell County. Those who live, own property or work in Corolla or Ocracoke will be allowed entry, the news release says.

Myrtle Beach without restaurants is just one step away from camping.

The only “backroad” into the OBX would be driving down the beach from Sandbridge, Virginia to Corolla and the Park Service would probably intercept you. Then, there’s the border fence to keep the wild horses in NC out of Virginia.

You’re not getting onto those islands as a visitor without a boat, in other words. There are two bridges from the mainland into Dare County. One public ferry. That’s it.

My grandfather was a moonshiner back in the 30s.

My dad taught me the back roads.

No. It’s a good two hours inland. Dare County is the part of NC that juts way out into the Atlantic. Cape Hatteras, Kitty Hawk, etcetera. Islands and water.

I live in Currituck county and the only way here is through Dare.

We locals petitioned to have the bridges closed. Grocery stores here are out of many items - TP, cleaning supplies, produce, eggs, milk, and the like. Our hospital here has few beds and very little ability to provide anything more than basic care - it’s a rural hospital. The bars and restaurants are closed and locals would like to be at home,

As of now, we have no COVID-19 cases here and we’d like to delay that as long as possible.

We are a resort community - no reason for anyone to come here except to vacation.

The officials are handling this like a hurricane in terms of re-entry. All residents have a pass to show that you live here. Delivery trucks and service trucks are allowed in. We just need our vacationers to wait a bit while we are all supposed to be home - as the president has asked.

This closure is locals driven and very welcome.

Sandbridge to Corova has very large gates on both ends. And yes, the Park police would catch you.

The same power that allows them to block entry to all but residents and property owners in the aftermath of a hurricane has been invoked for this.

All highways are owned and maintained by the states. The US Numbered Highways and the Interstate Highway System meet certain standards and are numbered to national grids, but they are legally state highways.

The feds help pay for certain nationally significant routes, but they are state owned.
