Coronavirus Response: Anxiety or Insanity?

Monday's Coronavirus Task Force press conference demonstrates the changed political, social, economic, and religious environment confronting USA. President Trump unveiled a new recommendation protocol for the next 15 days, approved by the task force today:

· Avoid gatherings of more than 10 people
· Avoid discretionary travel like shopping trips and social visits.
· Avoid bars and restaurants and food courts —
instead, use drive-thru, pickup, and delivery options
· If you work in health care, pharmaceutical, or food supply, "you have a
special responsibility to maintain your normal work schedule."
· If someone in your house has tested positive, the entire household
should stay home.
· Older people and those with underlying health conditions should stay home
· The guidelines also recommend that states with evidence of community
spread should close all bars, restaurants, food courts, gyms, and indoor and
outdoor venues.

These suggestions aim to compress the severe restrictions in an effort to reduce the time under restrictions. It is hoped that these procedures will allow the peak infection period to be diminished. But why did the CDC recommendation of limiting gatherings to 50 people become obsolete after only a few days? The panic at the stores has pushed governors to take control. The task force has given guidelines that exceed the majority of states' orders. The feds now appear to be leading again.

Ohio governor just closed down hair salons, and the bmv. About the only thing left is drive through bank, drive through food, and grocery stores.

I think it’s an overreaction. But, not totally unjustified. It’s important to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system. But, this stuff isn’t going away. They are creating the impression that if you hide, you won’t get it. Wrong. You just won’t get it as quickly. Sooner or later you have to get something that someone else touched, or come in contact with someone else.

This stuff is going to make the rounds.

Trump’s initial instincts on this were sound. Just a couple of weeks ago he was telling people to calm down, because this is no worse than a bad case of the flu.

It all changed when prudent precautions were overtaken by idiotic panic — not among the political leadership of the country, but among the dopes on the street.

But Trump saw what was happening in Europe and knew there was no way he could justify not taking similar actions.

Little bit from column A. Little bit from column B.

I’m not criticizing him at all. My point is that his initial instincts were correct, and that everything that has unfolded since then has been driven mainly by political considerations and an infantile need (among the general public) for people to have their leaders tell them what to do.

In all fairness, they were stampeded by the msm and validated by the politicians. And even many here on FR bought into it without hesitation.

The panic inflection point in Louisiana was when Bel Edwards shuttered the schools. I suspect the teacher’s unions had some input on his decision.

The panic has been driven by the media. The media is the most influential force in our body politic and whipping the nation into hysteria and panic serves their interest.

The media is driving the bus now and Trump has been placed in a posture of reacting to the media (and public opinion driven by the media) more than following his own instincts.

I don’t think they were stampeded by anyone. I think the media fanned the hysteria, and the politicians were actually latecomers to the game.

Oh, I think Trump is taking the absolute right approach. I know there are daily calls with the other G7 leaders to not only get through this, but to rollout the reboot of the world economy, so that things get back up and running quickly.

Thank God Trump is there now.

I don’t often agree with you, but in this case we’re on the same page. Maybe it is Armageddon!

That's really the dirty little secret. With no vaccine the only way to get back to normal is to let enough people get infected and acquire immunity. The trick is to keep it spreading slow enough so that it doesn't overwhelm the medical system. It's talked about as slow the spread....not stop the spread.

THe same media that gave us Bill Clinton and tried to foist that lovely pig in a pantsuit, Hildury? That gave us Barrack Hussein Obama?

I'll pass on this one too.

Anxiety or Insanity?

False dichotomy. How about prudent action, like you know, putting out a fire in your kitchen before your house burns down.
