Coronavirus unmasks America's real national security vulnerabilities
The Hill ^ | March 17 2020 | BRIG. GEN. ROBERT S. SPALDING (USAF RET.)

The offshoring of American manufacturing that occurred when China entered the World Trade Organization damaged U.S. national security. Now, the coronavirus outbreak and its rapid worldwide spread has thoroughly disrupted global supply chains and provided a stark reminder that industrial capability is a component of any nation’s security.

America is dependent on China’s non-market-based economy for most of our pharmaceutical supply. Masks used by all medical professionals to protect themselves from contagions were blocked from export by China. In addition to these, add the necessary numerous parts and supplies required by the U.S. military that are sourced through China to the list of items vulnerable to supply-chain disruptions.

Yet, the coronavirus-induced disruption offers an opportunity to fix a glaring weakness in our national security while providing a much-needed boost to the economy.

Rather than quantitative easing — which has been the main policy option in recent financial crises — it’s time to dust off fiscal stimulus to help kick-start economic growth in the coronavirus aftermath.

The Defense Production Act (DPA) and DPA Title III program give the Department of Defense (DOD) broad authority to conduct industrial policy in support of national security. These authorities and a portion of the DOD budget could be used to stimulate the reshoring of critical manufacturing capabilities such as pharmaceutical supply, semiconductors and microelectronics.

China must never again be trusted with participating in our supply chain.

China must never again be legally able to gain access to American technology.

China must be relegated to Consumer status only.

The only exports allowed from these dinks should be silk and fireworks.

“China must never again be trusted with participating in our supply chain.”

That’s not the whole point. our essential manufacturing needs to be brought back to the US. Not simply moved from China to some other low-paid country. Our manufacturing CEOs (and their political front men like Mitch, Paul Ryan and Jeb Bush) must start being American patriots, not globalist scammers. BRING THE JOBS - AND THE SUPPLY LINES - HOME!

The flip side of this coin is that the virus reveals the vulnerabilities of a “service economy” that is based on human contact.

Is it really a good idea to expect the Pentagon to be picking and choosing what businesses should get special benefits?

In the last 20 years we’ve gotten into the wars in Afghanistan Iraq Syria Libya, Yemen. Maybe they should try winning one of them, before we give more power to the Pentagon and the Federal Bureaucracy.

During that time we’ve lost huge amounts of industry to China. The way to reverse that loss is very simple. Just put a 50% tariff on everything we import from them.

This started with GHW Bush.
Had he cut off China after they slaughtered their own people at Tiananmen we would not be dependent on them today.

I guess about half of America has the IQ power to comprehend this. The problem is that the other half, liberals/libertarians/demoRATs, use up all their 2 or 3 IQ points just to get dressed in the AM.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans in Washington joined hands to offshore our manufacturing. There’s no clean hands/
Bill Clinton and George W Bush were all part of it, along with Cheney, Mitch, Paul Ryan and the other Republican “heroes.” One of the reasons the GOP establishment opposed Trump so fiercely - and still does - is his opposition to offshoring.

Totally agree. The contrast between that and how he handed the Wall coming down in Europe could not have been more stark. He chose making all of his Cheap Labor Express friends fabulously rich over America's future and freedom around the world as a priority.

You can add outfits like the Chamber of Commerce along with the rest of the globalist.

West Nile virus should have been a wake up call to our vulnerabilities but was minimized and it was a vector borne virus, not respiratory. Our enemies watched it spread and took notes IMO.

“wars in Afghanistan Iraq Syria Libya, Yemen. Maybe they should try winning one of them”

So you think we should stay and fight a slightly different way, instead of getting out and spending our money on Americans’ needs - including their security from viruses - here at home?

If that’s your position - let’s stay and fight “to win this time” - it’s not different from Bill Kristol or George W Bush or even Obama . (Bush and Obama both kept us in these endless wars, on the theory that somehow, with just a different strategy this time, they could be “won,” and that it was America’s duty to invade and change the regimes of countries halfway around the world, no matter the cost to US taxpayers)

“He chose making all of his Cheap Labor Express friends fabulously rich”

And Clinton, W Bush, Cheney (ie the real president from 2001-2009, and Obama, kept the policy going.

Hell, any democrat president would do the same thing here if we rose up.
