WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin warned Republican senators on Tuesday that failure to act on a proposed coronavirus rescue package could lead to U.S. unemployment as high as 20% and lasting economic damage, a person familiar with the closed-door meeting said. Mnuchin met with senators to persuade them to pass a $1 trillion stimulus package that would send cash to Americans within two weeks and backstop airlines and other companies.

I have thought that for a bit but to infect the entire world with a death virus is not gonna be accepted at all.

This is not a death virus for anyone other than those that are normally at risk, particularly the elderly. Case in point - the average age of those that have died from the coronavirus in Italy is 81 - 81! That tells you all you need to know about this utter nonsense. I thought this country was better than this, but apparently we aren't.

I seems like a very sophisticated 2 prong attack on our country.

Physical Health and Economic Health.

President Trump is right to be very aggressive with this.

He’s looking at losses, when he needs to be looking at labor-movement.

If it approaches anything near that, it will be a transitional spike, which, even that will be short-lived as the virus dissipates into our collective memory-hole....

“Instead of sending out millions of $1000 checks, just temporarily fast track unemployment. The system is already there. Just remove the initial length of time before one can apply and receive.”

Do both.

Let me guess - a killer plague that will decimate the population? Just like SARS, just like the bird flu...oh, wait, that didn't happen, did it? I can tell you one thing we are avoiding - behaving like a stable, sane country that once valued freedom.

My wife works at Nordstrom. Yesterday around 3:00 she was told her hours had been further cut. Within two hours she found out the store would be closed for two weeks. Tonight it was extended to the end of April. We are well and truly screwed.

....

And sadly, many of your fellow FReepers could give two sh*ts! They are lapping up all the lies, conjecture, and hysteria the Fake News is throwing at them! Even with the real possibility of our economy collapsing over this utter fraud, they couldn’t care less! The Fake News has convinced them that 7,955 deaths world wide is a pandemic! They want the government to take control of everything to protect their sorry A$$es!

Ben Franklin was right:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

It will be 30% for a short period, in spite of the stimulus.

“At this rate we are looking at a $5+ trillion bill for shutting down the country during the Wu Flu Panic of 2020.”

At least.

It’s not so much what it’s trying to avoid, but what it’s going to create. Financial collapse resulting in more dead than any virus.

Are you a Major?

I hope you understand how and why the government is taking the steps they are taking.

FDR put all Japs in camps in 1941.

Hope you do okay. We’re ok for now. Helping out some elderly neighbors tomorrow taking them to the senior hour at the grocery store. Sounds ridiculous to even say it.

Stay safe and able to help. Thanks

Think of these hand outs as reparations for the mess created by our previous rulers. This is money we would have had if it wasnt stolen from us and laundered.

This should be a 3-6 month problem then slowly back to normal.

Back to normal? Gov't-forced-shutdowns for a week is likely enough to kill off a couple businesses, you think any non-chain restaurant (or even most chains) is gonna survive 3-6 months of zero revenue? Even if they're lucky enough to own their land/building and be fully paid off to where they can shut down and run near-zero expenses, what staff is gonna be around when they re-open? How is the owner gonna survive during that time? Many have little savings - it's all locked up in the hard assets of the business.

And not just restaurants - any small business is gonna have a hard time if they have lowered or no revenue for longer than a couple weeks. My company does corporate AV, and almost the entire rest of March, and a lot of April have canceled/postponed. Two of our busiest months, and we're taking time off from the office...
