Brooklyn DA says his office won't prosecute some low-level offenses amid coronavirus outbreak

Low-level offenses that don’t jeopardize public safety will not be prosecuted in Brooklyn amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Tuesday.

The measure is part of an effort for his office to implement social distancing practices in order to limit potential exposure to the virus for employees and visitors, Gonzales said.

“During this public health emergency, it is imperative that we also protect those who might be exposed to the coronavirus during the procedures of arrest, processing and detention in Central Booking,” he said in a statement posted to Twitter.

Why WOULDN'T there be looting?

I hope those New Yorkers pack...even if it's not legal.
OR walk with two giant pit bulls, salivating.

Define “low-level offenses”. Gotta feeling some are going to push the envelope on this.

Exactly. “Low level” like ignoring curfews etc?

After all, protecting and serving citizens has been legally ruled as not a requirement of the PD... So “low level” could literally be anything...

Leftists are total idiots.

It is one thing if you communicate internally (strictly internally) that you aren’t going to enforce things, but putting out in the public space where criminals can read it, is like ringing the dinner bell for unlawful gluttony.

Completely moronic.

So, just a quick clarification please...

Is it okay to rob the home of Eric Gonzalez? Asking for a friend...

I wonder if they prosecute somebody that coughed on someone else? Is that a capital offense now?

"Why would they announce this?"

They are doing everything they can to cause a breakdown in society and spread fear and panic among the citizens. This during an election year. This after spending three years accusing Trump of colluding with the Russians to affect the 2016 elections. These are EVIL people.

It reminded me of that Obama Era guidelines from the DOE and DOJ (since revoked by Trump) of the “get out of jail free” card for juvenile teens in school who break laws, steal, or assault others, based on the assertion that those laws disproportionally affect minorities.

So, minority students were granted leeway to commit violence, even against teachers before they could be disciplined by the school.

All done under the guiding umbrella that schools would be punished in a variety of ways if they disciplined minority students at a greater rate than non-minority students, even if they committed infractions at a greater rate.

Even the stupidest student with violent tendencies saw that for what it was, and they took advantage of it to visit violence on their teachers and classmates.

It isn’t rocket science, that’s for sure.
