Coronavirus prompts McDonald's to close store seating, play areas

McDonald’s is scaling back operations at stores in North American because of the coronavirus outbreak, the company said Monday.

The fast-food chain will limit service at company-owned stores in the region to drive-thru service, walk-in take-out and deliveries. Seating areas, self-service kiosks and children’s play areas are closed until further notice.

“We believe this temporary change is the right decision for our consumers, our communities, and our business and will continue to evaluate our operations as the situation evolves,” the company said in a statement.

McDonald’s franchisees in North America are “strongly encouraged” but not required to enact the same policies. The adjusted store policies take effect at the close of business on Monday.

The changes at McDonald’s stores came as government officials recommend that Americans practice “social distancing” in order to slow the spread of coronavirus. Many U.S. companies have cut back on store hours, tweaked service policies or closed locations entirely due to the risks.

A relative told me that her place of work was shutting down, and that she personally had to give her whole office area a thorough cleaning and "bleach" wipedown before she left for the day.

Were the local McDonald's to do likewise, it would be the second time in its history to be clean. How in the hell the germ-infested "play places" (not just McDonald's) have managed to slide under the health radar so long is still baffling to me.

When I bought a Thai restaurant years ago, the first thing the health inspector said was, "Thank god, finally an owner who admits to speaking English."

The list of defects I had to correct was three pages. Things that they could never get done for years.

Chick-fil-A, a place I used to frequent, has done the same.

50 years ago (OMG!!!!!) we played on places like this all day every day, outside in the dirt and mud, barefoot, and we never got sick like this.

I don’t have a problem with this.
At least they are not completely shutting down..which feels wrong...very wrong.
Kind of like giving up?
The left is trying to return to the days of obama..with half the country on some form of government assistance and or unemployed ..their 401k in the crapper..and everything is looking dismal for the future.
Shared misery rather than prosperity.

Outside. Nobody cleaned them off, they just sat outside in the sunshine and the rain (and snow, in my case). Nature was apparently disinfectant enough.

The indoor fast food ones are another matter.

UV light from the sun is a great disinfectant. That makes a huge difference between indoor and outdoor play spaces.

Chick-fil-A started this yesterday. Extremely long lines at the drive thru. Worth it though.

They were open for seating here in Rome, NY yesterday afternoon. I went in to get a couple of breakfast sandwiches that they owed me for a previous wrong order.

Those play areas are some nasty looking fields of bacteria. But that's anywhere kids gather.

I can't believe I used to spend my summers at the pool. Now I've learned they measure urine content of pools ..... by the gallon.

They should shut those things down at least once a year and Clorox the place. This cant be a bad thing.
