Britain's coronavirus crisis could last until Spring 2021 and see 7.9million people hospitalised, a secret briefing for senior NHS figures has revealed.
The document, seen by The Guardian newspaper, shows that health chiefs expect the virus to last for another 12 months, and details how it will impact key staff in the NHS, police and fire brigade.
It says: 'As many as 80% of the population are expected to be infected with Covid-19 in the next 12 months, and up to 15% (7.9 million people) may require hospitalisation.'
It is understood the document was drawn up in recent days by Public Health England's preparedness and response team.
Dr Susan Hopkins, Deputy Director of PHE’s National Infection Service said: 'PHE used reasonable worse-case scenario figures, to restate the importance for people with symptoms to stay at home, including health care workers in order to reduce the spread of the virus.'
Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, and expert in epidemiology said: 'For the public to hear that it could last for 12 months, people are going to be really upset about that and pretty worried about that'
'A year is entirely plausible. But that figure isn't well appreciated or understood.'

Italy’s coronavirus toll surges as worries grow over hospitals

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy recorded 368 more deaths from the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday, its biggest one day rise, amid growing concern about the ability of its strained health system to cope with the relentless increase in new cases.
While the virus has begun spreading rapidly across Europe, Italy remains the second most heavily affected country in the world after China, where the illness first emerged, and the outbreak has shown no signs of slowing.
The government is working urgently on procuring more protective equipment, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said, adding there was maximum attention on helping Lombardy, the northern region where the virus emerged just over three weeks ago.
“Our priority is to keep doctors, nurses and all our health personnel safe,” Conte said in a statement a week after his government imposed a virtual lockdown across the country in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.
With 24,747 cases and 1,809 deaths by Sunday - a rise of 368 or 25% in the death toll in just 24 hours - Italy’s experience has offered an alarming example for other European countries which have begun seeing sharp rises in cases over recent days.
Lombardy, the heavily populated area around the financial capital Milan, has been the worst-affected region with 1,218 deaths. Of those, 252 were recorded in the last 24 hours.

(No, they get to the hospital first, because they are weakest. As long as total case #s are low, everybody gets an ICU bed adn a ventilator who needs one. But once hospitals are overrun (Italy) and all ICU beds/ventilators are taken, the infection begins to kill younger folks. Read this. I could post ten more links, this will do.

8 million people over the next year will not be treated by NHS. They don’t have the capacity. Or they are preparing phony stats where being treated includes getting a test and no other health services provided. If it is difficult or costly Brits have to go elsewhere or wait until they die. Unless of course they are “important”.
As an example, to solve to people in the waiting room too long, they passed a rule that they had to be seen within so many hours of arrival. The practical solution? They would not bring them in from the Ambulance till they could be seen. Same time frame, and within the rules. It is a bureaucratic solution, and the stats will be okay. The patients, not so much.

The stories themselves, the scientists and docs were saying greater susceptibility in asian and middle eastern folks. Italy has the highest percentage of muzzies in it in europe. Plus hygiene issues in these areas hasn’t helped, with this or any other infectious disease.
This, like any other disease, hits infirm, elderly, and people living in tight packed spaces. there’s not a lot of surprise as to who’s been hit hardest by it.
