Like the flu? Trump's coronavirus messaging confuses public, pandemic researchers say

The coronavirus is not as bad as the seasonal flu. President Donald Trump is not worried about having had a direct exposure to the virus. The United States is in far better shape than other countries.

Those are some of the messages from Trump to the American public in recent days.

They are textbook examples of disastrous communication during disease outbreaks, according to some researchers into the psychology of pandemics and how leaders can most effectively communicate to keep the public safe during them.

Trump is known for his informal style in attempts to, for instance, calm markets amid trade wars. In the past few days, decision-makers in the United States including the president have taken a flurry of steps to try to curb the spread.

“It’s essential in managing pandemics that leaders are seen as credible and trustworthy,” said Steven Taylor, a psychiatry professor at the University of British Columbia and author of the 2019 book “The Psychology of Pandemics.”

“If the public loses the trust of its leaders, people will not listen to them when they offer good advice.”

History has shown that leaders trying to manage pandemics without full transparency hamper citizens from acting to help, Taylor said.

Ahhh, the media vultures, sensing a Trump carcass, are starting to circle.

Little do they know (but they should), Trump will bounce back from this in even better shape than before. Or, maybe they do realize and are trying to do as much damage as possible.

Sorry, lamestream media. It ain't gonna work!!!

MSM will soon have Trump creating the virus in a secret room in the basement of one of his hotels.

We would’ve already been killed off by China if it were not for Trump.

The thing that is hurting Trump is that he says one thing and then the CDC, Pence, and members of his Coronavirus team says something different. The administration needs to get it’s messages to match up.

RE: Trump’s coronavirus messaging confuses public, pandemic researchers say

When ever I hear someone criticize a leader’s messaging, I cannot help but ask — what if YOU, the critic, were in his position, how would you present your message?

So, what say these pandemic researchers?

We are in better shape than most countries because of Trump’s travel bans and his strong economic policies. So stuff it, Reuter’s.

If we only treated THE FLU like the Wuhan Virus, perhaps tens of thousands of Americans would not be dead.

We would’ve already been killed off by China if it were not for Trump.

Democrats would put out an open invitation to every person with Wuhan virus in the world to emigrate immediately to the United States. They would have been registered as Democrats right at the arrival gate. Legislation would have been rushed through allowing immigration officials to issue voter registration materials when they checked passports.

As the virus began to spread rapidly though the population, the MSM would be calling it "the new normal."

Anyone who objected would immediately be branded a racist.

Of the 25 countries with the highest number of cases in the world, America has the second lowest rate of infection at 6 cases per million people. Japan is the best with 5.5%

Does this mean America is doing a good job?

Looks that way, considering what a high travel destination we are and the fact that we have a high percentage of people who travel for work and pleasure compared to most countries.

There is nothing confusing about his messaging. The confusion is all of the pundits re-interpreting it to fit their narrative instead of just listening and reporting.

I expect Trump to pick good Supreme Court cases.

I don’t expect him to be a public health expert.
