Two-thirds of Americans concerned about contracting coronavirus, as country grapples with growing crisis: POLL
ABC "News" ^ | March 13, 2020 | By Kendall Karson

Two-thirds of Americans are concerned that they or someone they know will be infected with the novel coronavirus, but in a country with a growing partisan divide, political tribalism is having a large impact when it comes to anxiety over the disease, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday.

Although unease over the coronavirus is high, it also strongly breaks along partisan lines. Among Democrats, 83% are concerned about getting coronavirus, including 47% who are very concerned, and among Republicans, 56% are concerned, including only 15% who are very concerned. Only 17% of Democrats are not concerned while a larger 44% of Republicans are not concerned.

Partisanship appears to be the most decisive factor of Americans' concerns, even more than age. While 29% of 18-29-year-olds are very concerned about catching the illness, 25% of people over 65 years old said the same.

A majority of Americans, 54%, disapprove of the president's handling of the response to the coronavirus, while 43% approve. Still, partisanship continues to fuel attitudes towards the White House's response, with the same amount of Democrats disapproving of Trump's managing of the health crisis as Republicans approving, 86%. Only 14% of Democrats approve, and 11% of Republicans disapprove.

But overall, relatively few Americans have changed their behavior since the coronavirus has landed here.

Only 3% said they are now working from home due to the coronavirus. And while about one-quarter of Americans said their lives had been disrupted in some way, either by canceling going out to dinner, taking a vacation, or opting to not vote in person, among other options, 73% have not canceled or postponed activities or events in their daily lives.

“Among Democrats, 83% are concerned about getting coronavirus, including 47% who are very concerned, and among Republicans, 56% are concerned, including only 15% who are very concerned. “

Outbreaks have clustered in urban, coastal areas, where Democrats are highly concentrated. That alone may account for the difference in “concern”.

Now that tells you how many are REALLY concerned.

What you do reveals more than what you say. that is why polls are garbage.

Covid-19 is not "over" in China. It's being held at bay by extreme, govt-ordered social distancing and quarantine, at the cost of shutting down their economy.

Since there is no "herd immunity" until 70+% of a population has been infected and recovered, the Chinese (or Italians, or Americans etc.) will be just as susceptible to new waves of Covid-19 in coming months or years. (Spanish Flu also came in waves, the 2nd was more deadly than the first.)

Every govt. faces this balancing act, while hoping that the first wave of CV will pass and their economies can be revived, without a return of CV. We are in uncharted waters as to the length and depth of the coming ordeal.

Hopes that CV will naturally fade away in the summer may be mistaken. An outbreak by community spread is happening in Manila, which is now under lock-down.

A faux crisis being hyped by ABC news. With a bunch of bogus poll figures.

There seems to a difference in the level of panic for liberals vs conservatives.

For example, our local Lutheran church, which celebrates LGBTQ+, open borders, hates Trump, etc, have gone to DEFCON 1 and will close down completely for the month.

Meanwhile the Baptist church down the block prayed about it and decided that they will remain open, changing only that the door greeters won’t shake your hand, and they’ll skip the meet-and-greet among the congregation at the start or the service. Otherwise it’s business as normal.

People thinking “I’m not 80, I have nothing to worry about” don’t realize what they are saying. I have never personally seen a hospital or clinic “over run” but I have heard about it. The clinic I was sent to be OIC of in Panama a couple weeks after the war was over had been designated as the medical treatment facilitiy for Panamanians wounded in combat (POWs). They treated over 600 combat casualties (the guys on the other end of our shooters) in 48 hours. They were doing surgery, amputations and chest tubes, in THE HALLWAY. They had a dozen stretchers set up in the hallway where they were doing surgery, the guy I replaced said they had buckets of blood everywhere and couldn’t clean it all up, they were wading in blood in that hallway at places ankle deep.

The problem our young friends have is they don’t realize when the hospital looks like this you are going to die in the parking lot from appendicitis. When the place is being over run it ceases to do anything else.

Probably rigged to a point but what it does show is Americans are not really buying into the outrageous hype of the media. Democrats are frightened because they are tiold to be frightened and Republicans are not frightened because they know the media has an agenda and our well being is not it.

Something to consider, perhaps. Southern Baptists pretty much get every nickel that comes in from the collection plates. The people in the seats own the building. Lutherans? They get Federal Funding for a lot of things, like immigrant resettlement. The people who use the parking lot own nothing.

“The problem our young friends have is they don’t realize when the hospital looks like this you are going to die in the parking lot from appendicitis. When the place is being over run it ceases to do anything else.”

Of course all should take precautions but nothing so far has shown this virus to be any more problematic and in most cases it is less than past ones such as Swine.

Young folks are statistically exempt from the virus if the available stats are to be believed.

The panic we are seeing is deliberate and targeted.
