Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.
In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

Manufacturing is dirty. It requires too much fossil fuel energy and causes pollution and toxic waste. And people actually have to work and stuff I just wanna play my bongos in the dirt. The US would be better off if everything was made in China even if it kills us all, which would be good actually, so Gaia can heal from all the damage done by you evil white capitalist pigs. /barking moonbat libtard mode off
Not just drug mfgr. Rare earth metals, electronics, capacitors, motherboards, RAM, etc etc....
We HAVE to have production capacity in house, period!
You know those pretty islands you have been building in the South China Sea? It would be a shame if somebody dropped some tungsten rods on them...just saying...
I can remember when the U.S.A. set the standard as far as manufactured goods went. Now.............
Clearly they’re not our friends. Yet politicians here are quick to defend them in all things. So virtuous of them.
I think food labeling is now off limits, at least fruits and vegetables are.
By far THE biggest expense in drug development is for mandated animal and human testing. It dwarfs all else.
My company did some instrument development for one of the big pharma companies (Eli Lilley). Their R&D "is" costly, but it is the testing part that is the tail that wags the dog.
Here is my take. China creates and infects the world with this virus and then to further punish the USA threatens to cut off supply of meds. This virus is a CHINESE BIOWEAPON and an act of war.
China has brought much of the Western world to its knees without firing a single shot.
If a company makes such an excellent product that it has no competitors, is it cheating if it charges a lot for their product?
No. In my opinion its not cheating unless the government gets involved, using (abusing) regulatory authority to pick winners and losers, by creating artificial compliance hurdles. For example, it is well known that big Pharma lobbies (bribes) lawmakers and FDA bureaucrats to make regulatory compliance too expensive for smaller competitors.
As for raising prices of excellent products - in a free market, that can only only happen up to a point. As they raise their price, there will eventually come a point where competition will enter the market, no matter how excellent the product is. The excellence of their product protects them from competition because it is more expensive to make an excellent product. So at a high enough price, it becomes worthwhile for competitors to make the necessary investment.
I happen to think the profit motive is not what corrupts markets - it is always the government - when corporations become wealthy enough to buy legislators, then they are using the law to rig the markets, by effectively making it illegal to compete with them. But it is the governments fault - they shouldnt be for sale.
I think most licensing and certification requirements exist for the corrupt reason of cutting out the competition. Every trade associate pulls this same dishonest game where they say for the safety of the consumer, we must not allow unlicensed or uncertified practitioners to practice [fill in the blank]. The real reason is not consumer safety, the real reason is to keep out the competition. They are using the government to protect them from competition in the false name of safety.
That is the root cause of all our problems - so many of our politicians are for sale to the highest bidder, and voters are too stupid to see whats happening, so they keep re-electing them.
The government should be enforcing laws against real crime - theft, false advertising, - even violating public safety or environmental regulation - if it is REAL. They shouldnt be accepting bribes and using regulatory authority as a way to pick winners and losers.
You can add this to the cost of those cheaper foreign made products the free traitors "won" for us.
The religion of free trade has completely gone too far. No one in their right mind should have believed that China would play fair or that they would ever do anything other than what they are doing now. Their recipe was always to build their own country up to challenge and overtake us and they don’t care who they hurt to do it.
It’s time for the U.S. to have an industrial policy to keep important things produced here. Medicine, rare earths, metals, shipbuilding, minerals, and important technological products need to be supported by whatever means necessary to preserve our sovereignty.
Another reason to repeal the 17th amendment
Harrumph!!!!
“Oh yeah? Well how about if we come over there and sink your shiny new PLA navy, just for starters? So there.”
Trump said China knew what caused the virus and so did the rest of the world. (pp) He mentioned this a couple of times in a way that may have been a veiled warning, to my observation. IOW, Trump might be (emphasis on might) be transmitting that it wasn’t bat soup that caused this and China could be called out on bio-weaponry development if they get too threatening along these lines.
He also made a statement that essentially said he didn’t consider that Chinese sourse credible, and of course the mandatory diplo-speak for Pres. Xi.
I’d like to see credible analysis of this precise statements.
