While everyone is in a panic about the coronavirus (officially renamed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization), there's an even deadlier virus many people are forgetting about: the flu.
Flu season is hitting its stride right now in the US. So far, the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.
The CDC also estimates that up to 31 million Americans have caught the flu this season, with 210,000 to 370,000 flu sufferers hospitalized because of the virus.

Even with a low death rate of 1% that would mean 310000 additional deaths that didn’t happen ever before will occur this year due to CV19.
The difference is that the coronavirus may hit a third of the country before all is said and done.
Focusing attention away from what has at the LEAST 10x the mortality rate of the flu would be insane.
It’s not gonna end the world but I think the articles talking about how the flu is worse are outdated and slightly irresponsible.
That article is now more than a month old and stats have significantly changed. Basically good info, but now is old.
“Study Suggests Medical Errors Now Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.”
“Analyzing medical death rate data over an eight-year period, Johns Hopkins patient safety experts have calculated that more than 250,000 deaths per year are due to medical error in the U.S. Their figure, published May 3 in The BMJ, surpasses the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDCs) third leading cause of death respiratory disease, which kills close to 150,000 people per year.”
Flu Bros are a quickly depreciating asset. This story is from Feb 11. Its been fully depreciated for a long time now.
Maybe not, but many of us are going to lose someone we love or need
An unknown number more will recover but be debilitated for a long time, perhaps life, with organ damage
Some of the debilitated will die in subsequent waves of reinfection
The spanish flu was in 3 waves
This was designed to be worse
Its way too soon to mock what we do not know, yet
It really is just another strain of flu, as far as I’m concerned.
We’re certainly not living in 12 Monkeys. :)
Us people under the age of 80 and not already ill with something else really need to get a grip and calm down.
It’s like we live in a world of precious snowflakes. Life is a mist. Snap out of it.
Maybe not, but many of us are going to lose someone we love or need...
In the next 90 days
A lot of people are going to die in the next 90 days, and only a fraction of them will be from this disease.
Again, this ain’t a 12 Monkeys thing. It’s the flu. And the flu has been a pandemic for centuries.
It’s just another thing you can, but probably won’t, die from.
Could you explain how this is relevant to any conversation about any other disease?
Except that the hospital beds are already full.
The two diseases are not related at all.
I think who this is gonna hit hardest is the health care industry’s profits. They are salivating over earning lots of money keeping old people alive for a little bit longer (I have experience with this). But if those old people go and contract this and then just die, well, look at all that profit that was lost. The last thing they want is old people that are healthy until the day they die. There’s no profit in that.
Focusing attention away from what has at the LEAST 10x the mortality rate of the flu would be insane.
It is also insane to not believe that their will not be new treatment methods and cures. Three treatment methods are showing great progress (not factored into your rate), Favilavir, Remdesivir, Actemra, REGN3048-3051, blood transfusions from survivors, etc...
Since so much money and dozens of companies are working on cures and vaccines, the survival will soon equal a standard flu.
Tough nuggies. Man up.
In my books it's......"Wuhan Flu", just like it was the Spanish Flu and the Hong Kong Flu and MERS (Middle East).
