The Great Coronavirus War Is Upon Us
Townhall.com ^ | March 12, 2020 | Victor, Davis Hanson

Try this thought experiment. Envision the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as a living, breathing enemy -- which, of course, is exactly what it is.

But imagine for a moment that we are in real war with a cognizant, thinking and clever enemy whose sole reason to live is to hurt, maim or kill as many of us as it can.

COVID-19 may not have jets, tanks or nukes, like our past enemies. But its arsenal, numbers, cunning and willpower are said to be formidable.

To win its war against Americans, COVID-19 must infect and sicken lots of Americans each day. If it cannot infect enough victims to multiply and sustain a hungry army of viruses, COVID-19 will soon sputter and die. It will get trapped in just a few hosts among an otherwise victorious and healthy nation of about 330 million.

Nature has given COVID-19 some weapons that its defeated cousins -- the H1N1 swine flu and the MERS and SARS viruses -- lacked.

It is more clever by being less lethal -- and a little tougher in its ability to live outside a host. Viral resiliency ensures that it rarely turns into a suicide bomber by dying with a terminally sick host, and that it does not perish so quickly when orphaned in the air and on surfaces.

The coronavirus has allies. It infiltrates our defenses by using our own weapons against us -- our dirty hands, the habitual touching of the face, and indiscreet sneezing and coughing.

Poor personal and public hygiene gives the virus some sustenance and camouflage. To win -- defined as sickening or killing thousands of us -- COVID-19 counts on our laxity. It hates careful individuals who block its invasion into the eyes, nose and mouth.

Do you have a link to the story about a judge putting a stay on President Trump’s order?

I saw a meme about it on the c-virus live thread.

For the first month of this smuggled videos were everywhere. Are you saying the Chinese just started censoring a month ago?

You people who dismiss COVID-19 as a media hoax are part of the problem. That attitude could get lots of folks killed in a pandemic.

Perhaps the poster I responded to was referencing the one judge who halted the ban on incoming travelers from known terrorist countries, which was a few years ago. I'm a little confused if there is an order for the current ban on European travel.

"...It has a 6% fatality rate among the elderly and people with underlying conditions such as diabetes and coronary artery disease. If the fear mongers weren’t so concerned about “educating us” they’d have advised elderly, diabetic and heart disease FReepers to get an oxygen bottle and breather in case of infection."...

How many old people, people with diabetes, and/or people with a heart condition do you personally come in contact with on a regular basis? Do you care about them?

I don’t remember the Swine Flu of 2009,

Most of us don't remember it.

Rush just pointed out that 300,000 people were hospitalized for it back then.

You’re not advocating panic?

How different would your posts look if you were?

Would you begin posting hockey stick graphs? Or charts trying to compare us to some other country who has many times as many visitors from the country of origin?

Or, what?

What would your posts look like?

I tell you, they would look just like the posts you are posting.

Your posts are lies, and you are not to be trusted with the truth.

I wonder when that data was last updated/how often updated. Any idea?

I should have been more concise, the 300,000 hospitalized were here in the United States.

Do you remember that? Do you remember the news media going 24/7 over the strain it was putting on hospitals? I sure don’t and my point is that all this hand wringing over hospital capacities is more than likely also way overblown.

No idea why they stopped. I would guess that even China’s ubiquitous surveillance took a little time to track down and eliminate the early leakers and smugglers.

Sorta has a chilling effect on anyone else tempted to put their necks on the line to warn ungrateful strangers...

I do not believe it is a “hoax” of any kind, nor did I ever say that.

The textbook formula for case fatality rate uses people who are still sick for the denominator in ongoing epidemics. Using everyone who WAS sick in an historical epidemic give an accurate number, as everyone who had the seasonal flu in the 2018-2019 season has finished the disease process. Assuming everyone who is still sick will survive isn't a very good assumption. Better to use people who have finished being sick as the denominator. As of 6:33 this morning (PDT) JHU CSSE reports US Cases as:

1323 Confirmed cases,
38 Total deaths,
8 Total recovered.

That's 46 cases that have run the full course.

If we calculate deaths/completed cases, we get a rather horrifying 82.3%.

Let's subtract the useless eaters in Washington from the totals.

8 deaths, 16 completed cases. That's only 50%, nothing to worry about!

Have a nice day!

Thanks; see if you can find anything recent.
I will ask the poster, when it comes up again.

If the media thought their reporting was not being detrimental to President Trump, there would be such a change in the reports.

They should be very careful not to be so gleeful.
