I turned 24 last month. The day before my birthday, I walked into a nail salon to get myself a birthday manicure. After I was seated, a nail technician walked over. She was an Asian woman in her 50s. She sat down and I smiled at her. I couldn’t see if she smiled back because she was wearing a face mask.
The technician looked at my hands, as if considering their shape, and then suddenly asked, “Are you Chinese?”
“I am,” I responded. “Are you?”
“No,” she said quickly, “I am Vietnamese. We all are in the salon. But are you from-China Chinese?” She raised an eyebrow, her tone like the edge of a blade, sharp and cold.
“You know, we are scared of you Chinese people,” she said loudly, because you eat “weird” food “and bring it here. Chinese people, I don’t like you, you are so bad, so bad and so gross.”
Finally, my voice cracking, I said: “I just came back from China in January.....

Well, Little China Girl, I don't care if you're whiter than Elizabeth Warren (is that possible?) if you just came back from China you may have a virus problem.
I don’t get it. Aren’t we all suppose to be socially isolating ourselves? What was she doing out in a busy nail salon? Certainly, manicures are not necessary in our time of deep crisis.

Saw a video last week of a couple of Chinese people in an African village. The locals were surrounding them shouting, “You Corona!” and the Chinese guy was shouting back, “I no Corona!”.
I still go to my same Chinese restaurant all the time. They serve Japanese and Thai as well, very good sushi also.
I have known them a long time now, about 10 years. I can’t say any of their names, but I think they are all wonderful, and I wouldn’t want to do anything to make them think otherwise.
All that being said, China sucks!
She has something worse than Coronavirus.
She has New York Slimesitis.

I find it unlikely that a Vietnamese individual would not know from observation the ethnicity of a Chinese oerson. Even I can generally perceive differences in Asian ethnicities.. Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai etc.
We have raised a generation of people who are literate, and can put together nice stories, but they are absolutely clueless about anything that goes on outside their little worlds, or that happened more than fifteen minutes ago.
OF COURSE the woman running the nail salon is Vietnamese. The Vietnamese have had a lock on that business for decades.
And a Vietnamese not liking a Chinese? That’s what being Vietnamese is all about. Not liking Chinese is what they do. Except when they’re not liking Cambodians, which for them is like not liking Chinese on steroids.
I have a compromise. Rather than name a growingly horrid pandemic after a whole people (hundreds of millions of them having nothing to do with it), and thus tainting other Asians who have nothing to do with it, such as Japanese, Vietnamese, etc (and there are increasing reports of racist comments or even attacks against innocent people by ignorant ignoramuses), focus in the naming of the virus to the core:

That’s more than likely where it originated, someone chowing down on bat or live mice, which I know most Chinese would be repulsed at least much younger people and female, this is not their gig anymore—mostly drunk old farts in from the Chinese countryside.
I think it is a reasonable compromise.
If it needs to be connected to China, do so to the CCP (REd Chinese leadership), not the people they have oppressed for 70 years.

I guess it is okay to read the news but I don’t believe there is an attempt for them to be accurate just sensationalize. Asians do all kinds of weird things like bringing a container of gasoline onto a bus and then light a cigarette. When things like that happen it is country folks, They have a poor grasp at how to act in a urban environment like washing hands. Chinese cities are loaded with these folks. It is no wonder that a virus spreads so fast.
