US hospitals are preparing for 96 MILLION coronavirus infections and nearly HALF A MILLION deaths, leaked documents reveal

US hospitals are preparing for 96 million coronavirus infections and nearly half a million deaths from the outbreak, leaked documents have revealed.

The spread of the deadly disease could be far worse than officials claim, with 480,000 Americans expected to die from the virus and 4.8 million hospitalized, according to a presentation hosted by The American Hospital Association (AHA) in February.

This puts the crisis on a level more than 10 times greater than that seen in a severe flu season.

The shock figures fly in the face of claims made by President Trump who has maintained on many occasions that the risk to Americans is 'low'.

Dr. James Lawler, a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, presented the harrowing 'best guess' estimates of the extent of the outbreak to hospitals and health professionals as part of the AHA webinar called 'What healthcare leaders need to know: Preparing for the COVID-19' on February 26.

The slides, obtained by Business Insider, suggest that hospitals need to ramp up preparations now to reduce the death toll around the US.

At the time of the presentation last week, there were more than 80,000 confirmed cases around the globe.

In the US there was around 60 cases and no deaths.

Fast forward just one week, and the US has around 700 cases and 17 confirmed deaths.

Worldwide, more than 100,000 people have now been infected.

The leaked slides also reveal the significant risks to older people and those with pre-existing health conditions if they catch coronavirus.

People aged 80 and over have a 14.8% chance of dying if they contract the infection, the slides revealed.

The risk declines with youth, though those aged 70-79 and 60-69 are still placed at a significant risk, with 8% and 3.6% mortality rates respectively.

Thanks.

Trump possibly exposed:

16m
CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp tells me he interacted with attendee who has tested positive for coronavirus. While the timeline is unknown, Schlapp shook Trump’s hand on stage the last day of the conference.

The ONLY thing Trump could have done differently is halt ALL international travel, basically close America off in advance of this, could he have done that, no clue other than doing that its a virus it would have come here eventually

Without seeing the actual source documents, I chose to believe that this is mainly fake news — hyped to support the ‘narrative’ that Trump isn't taking it seriously enough.

I'm guessing that these scary figures are just part of a “worst-case scenario’ generated for purposes of planning exercises. Naturally, the ‘best-case’ and ‘most-likely case’ scenarios aren't fit to print — because they wouldn't be as scary.

Yeah. No. I call BS. No worse than the deaths of an ordinary annual flu virus

You do understand that the Wusan flu deaths and the deaths from re-infection are on top of those from the regular flu? And you can have both at the same time?

So they project a 0.5% mortality rate.

Or they set bounds on two different factors that might be handle-able, and didn’t multiply. Or the plan is generic and not really relevant to this particular case.

Or it’s rubbish reporting.

"Might be fearmongering but good for the health care industry planning NOT to be caught with their scrub pants down."

Planning (gaming?) is never a bad thing. Yet there are only approximately 3,900 general acute care hospitals with 746,000 staffed beds. The worst case scenario would indeed be worse case.

Once again I bring up question about flu shots. Did the Chinese ,Italians, Koreans and Iranians all get yearly flu shots? They seem to be getting hit harder than other countries.

“Leaked” my Aunt Fanny. The release was deliberate. And very likely had political motive.

Re your comment about the number of people being cured vs the number of new infections:

A huge percentage of the cured cases are those reported by China. Way over 90%, perhaps over 95%. If you look at the Wiki data for the non-Chinese countries the new cases far outweigh the cured cases. It’s not even close.

Personally I don’t trust anything about this virus coming from the self-serving commie regime in China. In this case I hope they are telling us the truth but I will remain skeptical until I see cures outnumbering new cases in our country.

These must be the same folks who keep predicting that snow storm to end all snow storms every other week here in the NE...

What kills me are the idiots who’ve lived here for 50+ years and FALL FOR IT - every time.

That, and either not throw out numbers (like he has done, from get go ... at rally before Super Tuesday saying “We’re have zero deaths, from cv”), or at least say ‘We aren’t sure”.

Maybe he is sure. I pray so. And, he knows something the hospital people and scientists, don’t.

“Should help with the traffic problem I guess.”

Here in Seattle most companies are telling people to work from home if they can. The typical 45 to hour commute Friday afternoon was 20 minutes.

Another week or two and we’ll look like Wuhan.

Not sure I buy into that one. In 1918-1919 deaths in the U.S. were 675,000.

Hmmm. Half a million deaths is less than the number of deaths from cancer in the U.S. in a single year. And more people die every year from heart disease than cancer.

Perspective.
