Amtrak announced Friday it would temporarily suspend its Acela Nonstop trains between Washington and New York beginning March 10 amid concerns about the coronavirus.
The company said in a statement that demand for direct routes between the cities has decreased and that nonstop service will be suspended through May 26.
"As we are experiencing some reduced demand for our service, we are making temporary adjustments to our schedule, such as removing train cars or cancelling trains when there is a convenient alternative with a similar schedule that will have minimal impact to customers," Amtrak said in a statement.
The statement came as New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) on Friday announced that a fourth person in the state had tested "presumptive positive" for coronavirus.
More than 300 cases of coronavirus have been reported across more than two dozen states, including dozens of cases in the northeast. Officials in Florida on Friday night announced the first deaths associated with the virus on the East Coast, bringing the total death toll to 17.
Amid concerns about coronavirus, Amtrak said Friday that it would remove change fees on reservations booked through April 30 and would also increase the number of hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes at stations and on trains, among other efforts.
FYI
I wouldn’t ride it anyway. Name sounds like a disease.
Ben Franklin: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Its the only profitable route Amtrak has.

(Clouseau voice) "Not anymore."
The NY-DC corridor is the most heavily traveled in the country.
In the 1980s, i took an Amtrak train from DC to Philadelphia:
The Northeastern route of Amtrak is the BIG money maker.
So what’ll our so-called public servants in Congress do? Refuse to leave DC? Hire private jets on the taxpayers’ dime?
Acela trains arrive 30 minutes faster than regular trains at considerably more cost to the passengers. Sham.
The Acela Corridor is the fig leaf for the rest of the boondoggle that is AMTRAK.
This is why we need to move 90% of the federal employees in the D.C. area out into rural America.
Its for their own safety.
This is about the elites protecting themselves. A serious ripple is running through the Northeast fabric of smug invincibility.
Will this affect regular Amtrak travel?
Entirely possible.
This was Joe Biden's personal 1:1 scale toy train set, wasn't it?
Now they'll be looking for a bailout.
Why suspend that one but allow the others to continue operating ? Typical government “worker “ mentality . Nitwittery is not dead.
It’s actually a great ride.
