Cruise ship with thousands awaits test results as coronavirus continues spreading around the country

SAN FRANCISCO —Military helicopters delivered testing kits Thursday to a cruise ship being held off the coast of California, as officials in Washington faced angry questions about whether the vessel is set to become the latest breeding ground for the deadly novel coronavirus.

The Grand Princess, which was returning to San Francisco after a two-week cruise to Hawaii, remained offshore and in limbo at the request of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D). About 100 people were expected to be tested, among them 11 passengers and 10 crew members who have shown potential signs of covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. Results were expected Friday.

Another Princess ship!

They should remove everyone to separate shore quarantine.

Don't leave them aboard to get the disease. If they don't have it, their chances are better in isolation.

Use some of the $ 8 Billion the government just passed.

Also, is it time to simply put all cruises on hold until this subsides?

Yeah.

I’m totally against hysteria and do not think this virus is going to be a pandemic like the old days (thanks to modern medicine), but this is ridiculous!

Stop the cruises until this is over, or at least establish better actions for ships to take. Like pre-board and off-board testing, strict crew policies on shore, immediate isolation on board (including no air exchange).

I agree.

If we learned anything from the Diamond Princess is that the longer the passengers stay aboard the more likely they will catch the virus.

Camps should be set up (on military bases) where the passengers could be better isolated and provided care by people who understand isolation techniques.

I am beginning to think it is not the ship per se, but crew members that are the source of the virus.

That could very likely be a source.

About 10 years ago my company had a Saturday night dinner at the local country club. Monday morning about half of the attendees(including me) had the norovirus. Almost all infected people missed work for two days. Turned out it was someone working in the kitchen at the country club who had it. The funny thing is that at our table of eight, all the guys got it. All the girls did not. We all had the steak too.

Stop the cruises until this is over, or at least establish better actions for ships to take.

Why stop there? We should ground all commercial airlines since there's nowhere for the passengers to be quarantined, and the speed and distances that airlines can fly will spread the virus everywhere in short order. Include all other forms of mass transit like buses, subways, trains, etc.

The next step is to close all office buildings and other public places like malls, museums, and schools. Also, play sporting events with no crowds, or cancel them outright.

We must do everything in our power to ensure that nobody else and I mean NOBODY else is exposed to or catches this virus.

Now, does that sound like an overreach? If it doesn't, you are too paranoid to be alive. Move to a cave in Idaho, miles from any other living being. Or isolate yourself in a germ-free bubble.

Live your life, people! The only difference between this virus and SARS or the swine flu or any other airborne virus is that we don't have a vaccine for it... yet! If you have pre-existing respiratory problems, you probably need to be extra careful, since that's where the largest mortality rate seems to be found now.

Is this not political show by the despicable Gov. Newsom? Couldn’t they at least have let the ship dock and handed over the test kits if even on a crane?

I would assume nearly all of these passengers booked their tickets months ago.

Imagine being so upset about losing the money that you would get on a cruise ship (CV incubator) in late February of 2020.

A CV test currently costs over $3K. What is a cruise ship ticket? How about your life? (Most are older than 65, in the high-risk category.)

You couldn’t pay me.

Actually, I agree with you about not worrying to death.

I’m not worried as I know smart people will get a handle on it.

Still, sensible actions should be taken.

The cruise ship industry is especially vulnerable because of the many foreign ports they visit.

So, why not limit them for a month or two while we all get a handle on this?
