Legislation announced on Thursday aimed at curbing the spread of online child sexual abuse imagery would take the extraordinary step of removing legal protections for tech companies that fail to police the illegal content. A separate, international initiative that was also announced takes a softer approach, getting the industry to voluntarily embrace standards for combating the material.
The two measures come as tech companies continue to detect an explosion of abusive content on their platforms, and amid complaints that neither Congress nor the companies have been aggressive enough in stopping its spread. An investigation last year by The New York Times found that many companies knew about the problem but failed to quash it, despite having the tools to do so, and that the federal government had not been adequately enforcing a previous law meant to stem the abuse.
Multiple U.S. agencies, together with the governments of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, released a set of voluntary guidelines on how platforms can stop the spread of online child sexual abuse material, commonly referred to as child pornography. Those recommendations were developed in conjunction with a half-dozen tech companies: Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Roblox, Snap and Twitter.

Everything is good but why are the international boundaries “voluntary”? Should be mandatory.

So the solution is that the tech companies have to review EVERY image you send or file? Do you possess any notion of privacy?
They would literally have to view every image they touched, period, no limitations.
Seems a bit extreme in my worldview.

They would crucify Trump for such things. Pretty much anyone else. But not their chosen puppet nominee. They care more about kissing powerful butt than in protecting children from a horror moment with a boundary crossing old man.
There are probably billions of porn images on the internet.
There will ALWAYS be people trying to find a way to certain sites.
I have to agree with you.
Set up guidelines for what they must do to prevent as much as possible.
But it’s like charging the police because someone in their precinct got shot or robbed.
Or charging Walmart because somebody stole something.
It’s a HORROR and they should legally have to do their best.
100 percent is not realistic.
Getting Hollywood to clean up their act would be a good place to start holding people accountable.
These companies would have to look at every private file, picture or not. This means they might also need to evict any file they weren’t able to accurately view.
In sum, it means nothing can be truly encrypted on their sites.
Seems to me like this is a really good excuse for the government(s) to lock down on the free flow of information on the internet. It’s for the children.
Basically any real implementation of this would be the death of privacy they’d have to monitor every step everybody in the world took and they’d have to scorch earth and take down a lot of legal stuff just to be sure. So in short you’d have to be delusional or extremely authoritarian to like this.

So you actually believe Google and Facebook, etc., respect your privacy and aren’t already compiling, analyzing and profiling all the content people give them? That you have privacy on the internet? They can find and ban conservative content and we see news about it regularly. Why not child porn?
You admit you don’t like tech companies having the power to peer into all your thoughts so you’re going to legally require them to keep this power?

Not everyone is an air head liberaltarian.
Because the vast majority of child porn isn’t traded on Facebook or even what we know as the traditional internet. 90% of that filth is traded on the “Dark web” or through various technologies that make it difficult to track or shut down.
And realistically, the government doesn’t want to stop the dark web anyway even if they could. The CIA uses the technology to communicate with assets in other countries. It’s how we can easily get information in and out of totalitarian countries.
The Senate knows this. That’s why it’s highly suspect when they come out with these censorship bills to “protect the children” that will do no such thing. What’s their true aim?
They don’t have a hard time monitoring conservatives. Let them move their effort to policing child prom, for sure.

This investigation identified over 5,000 individuals, including many affiliated with DOD, who were subscribed to child porn websites.
The Pentagon’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service subsequently identified hundreds of DOD-affiliated individuals as suspects involved in accessing child pornography, several of whom used government devices to view and share the images.
The National Criminal Justice Training Center, one of the groups that has thrown its weight behind the bill, reported in 2018 that DOD’s network was ranked 19th out of almost 3,000 nationwide networks on the amount of peer-to-peer child pornography sharing.
