The mortality rate associated with COVID-19 may be "considerably less than 1%," instead of the 2% reported by some groups, write Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and colleagues in an editorial published February 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The editorial appeared alongside a report by Wei-jie Guan, PhD, and colleagues, that characterized 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from 552 hospitals in China through January 29, 2020. Guan is with the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in China, "Guan et al report mortality of 1.4% among 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19; these patients had a wide spectrum of disease severity. If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%," Fauci and colleagues write.
"This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively."

The title is really screwed up.....it appears too you didn't exactly read it the text carefully yourself perhaps.
There's nothing wrong with quarantining people....especially groups of Chinese.

I ate at a Chinese Buffet last week and I KNOW many of the workers and friends have recently been to China. Should we shut down every Chinese restaurant and Buffet in the country?? Should identify every single one as being a potential hotspot for transmission.
Inquiring minds want to know.......

You likely need to take a breath or two, not fretting so about what you don’t know, rather paying attention to what you do know near you and can do about it.

Having spent a lot of time in Florida over the last 15 years, I’m a bit more worried about the impulse control and judgment of many of the state’s inhabitants than I am about Coronavirus.

People are STILL traveling to China, really???
To: ncalburt
Why would that their personal information be any of your business? Where do you get the idea they were moved out of state? The article does not read that at all.
As long as they are in quarantine and are being monitored, patient confidentiality still holds. They will be retested and when the results are negative then they will be released from quarantine.

De Santis is very good. Nobody needs to know where these people are. There have been attacks on perfectly innocent Chinese people in London and other cities, taking us back to the “Yellow Peril” times, over 100 years ago.
We don’t want to go there again. This is basically a flu type virus (respiratory) and outside of China, because of their history of miserable conditions for working people, political corruption, lousy hospitals, is not going to be a serious killer. There will be a vaccine soon and also enhanced versions of Tamiflu. Why are we going so crazy about this?

That information can only be released with the patient’s consent. If not, whoever released it can face legal and professional ramifications.
