Coronavirus Coronavirus prevention: How to make hand sanitizer at home

If you weren’t able to snap up a bottle of hand sanitizer before stores sold out, you can make your own. You find the basic ingredients in any drug store and most grocery stores. Here’s what you need:

2/3 cup Isopropyl alcohol 91% (rubbing alcohol) 1/3 cup aloe vera gel Essential oil in your choice of fragrance (optional) A small or medium mixing bowl A spoon An empty container, such as a 3-ounce container from a travel toiletries kit A small piece of masking tape for labeling

Here’s how to make it:

In a mixing bowl, stir Isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel together until well blended.

Add 8-10 drops of scented essential oil (optional, but nice!). Stir to incorporate.

Pour the homemade hand sanitizer into an empty container and seal. Write “hand sanitizer” on a piece of masking tape and affix to the bottle.

The CDC recommends using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. This recipe makes a sanitizer that slightly exceeds that alcohol content at 60.66%, so follow the proportions exactly. If you want a sanitizer with a higher alcohol percentage, decrease the amount of aloe vera to 1/4 cup.

With fair skin that sunburns easily I always have a bottle of aloe vera on hand; usually with lidocaine in it. By adding alcohol I could sanitize and numb my hands at the same time.

Perhaps check with Amazon, Walmart, Target. I have been considering getting one ever since I suffered a mild strike.

I think soap and water will do the trick.

“Sad that so many of what used be Americans are now hoarding.“

The old WWII saying was “Make it, make do, or do without”.

Who has large amounts of aloe vera gel around at home?

Probably easier to find on amazon than hand sanitizer. Making it this way is probably a heck of a lot cheaper than the pre-made stuff as well.

Pure hysteria. We’re exiting cold and flu season right now, and the flu is proven to be more deadly than the coronavirus - no run on Purell for the flu, but suddenly people decide they have to have it for coronavirus.

I love the part of the label that says “Warning: Overconsumption may endanger your health”.

I keep a small bottle of it around to help with mosquito bites in the summer. Also works as emergency fuel for a zippo.

Haha me too. I had this huge planter in my front courtyard with nothing in it. At one of our buncos the hostess gave plants for gifts. Mine was a small little aloe vera plant. I put it in that pot and now it’s humongous!
