As concerns of COVID-19 spread across the United States, public health officials are advising people to wash their hands regularly. In response, people have been scooping up large loads of hand sanitizer, leaving store shelves empty and online retailers with sky-high prices set by those trying to profit on the rush. More is on the way, although it's not clear how long it will take retailers to restock.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom pointed out on Twitter the shockingly high prices amid hand sanitizer mania.
Newsom shared images of a 24-pack of pocket-size bottles selling for $400. "Seriously, @amazon? These prices are absurd," he commented.

Jeez! Next you’ll be spouting some crazy talk that people shouldn’t make salads in the shower!

When I worked at Taco Bell while in college, I had two white shirts for work. Came home after work, and took a shower wearing the work shirt, got it and me clean, hung it up and it was dry and ready for work after the second day.
1. Supply-and-demand. Prices rise to ensure supply for those willing to pay a high-friction price for it.
2. Amazon-listed sellers may use dynamic pricing, where computers determine the “fair price” (sometimes with funny results). See #1.
3. Before anyone says “price gouging”, see prices & availability of N95 masks hoarded by idiots who don’t actually need/use them, then see #1.
Surely pocket sized bottles of hand sanitizer are a fundamental human right, just like smartphones and tampons. The California state government should start doling them out, and make the taxpayers pony up for it later.
Go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of 100 proof Vodka. It will work!
Absolutely correct. No need to go hog wild for hand sanitizer. Liquid dish soap works just fine. If you feel you need more cleaning, add a little bleach to it.
Just dont be like Kramer and start trying to multitask and do the dishes why you are in the tub.
POSH! Anyone knows it works better in the shower!
If only “the market” were allowed to work the way it is supposed to work...
Let the producers ramp up production to meet the $500/unit demand. Fools and their money... With the taxes generated, everybody else could pay regular prices. Extra time off for production employees. Win-win, all the way around.
The guy that taxes everything that moves is worried about high costs - F him.
You can make your own hand sanitizer too. https://www.oregonlive.com/coronavirus/2020/03/coronavirus-prevention-how-to-make-hand-sanitizer-at-home.html
Yup. Look at the active ingredient in Purell or generic had sanitizers. It is isopropanyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) which is not to be taken internally. However, high proof ethanol alcohol (in booze) is just as effective.
Easier, buy some quarts of rubbing alcohol and mix with aloe vera or other hand lotion since the alcohol will dry out your hands if used alone.
We do the above not because of Covid-19, but to avoid cold and flu season. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Before you touch the first doorknob when entering the house, thoroughly wet down your hands and saturate the knob before your choice of product drys. AS IMPORTANTLY: Never touch your face when out and about until you can clean you hands with any alcohol. If you have an itch, use the back of your hand.
