A suggestion from another poster is that there are many ethnic Chinese in this area of Seattle and some undoubtedly returned to China for the New Year’s celebration. Then came back to Seattle and were not checked because this was before widespread recognition of the virus was available. The festivals started on Jan 17 and ran to Feb 8. Trump’s travel restrictions were started on Jan 31 but US citizens could still travel from China back to the US.

“Doctors and nurses need training in the use of N95 masks, goggles and protective gear when treating suspected cases.”

newsflash: nursing homes are a ‘crowded event’ - all day every day - patients in, patients out, nursing students, visitors, employees, maybe even some relatives who are far too busy to take care of their own and expect the government to warehouse them - far more traffic than the average workplace

newsflash: the sick do not walk into ERs with a sign around their neck, I have a contagious disease requiring Level 3 PPE.

what a tripe, virtue-signaling, it’s the old people and medical staff problem, article. Pfffftttt.

Funny you should say that, Wife and I were true snowbirds for 4 years back in 2002 but now are too old to handle the travel. We are also staying out of activities for the next month because we live in “The Villages of San Jose” and it could be a hotbed for the new virus if it takes hold here.

Yes, the warm temp has always saved me so far, I seem to be fine all summer long and as I was a teacher for many years, I always caught something terrible at the start of the school year.

But this idea that I should take antibiotics at once is new, because I am seeing a true lung specialist. BTW, this is because I got a lung infection from a pulmonary embolism from a surgery. The doctors noticed it right away but the damage to my lungs was apparently due to an infection that came later. Anyway they classify me as having Reactive Airway Disease which sends my bronchial tubes into spasms when a cough starts. Naturally I am not the most popular person in the elevator. This also qualifies me as someone with an underlying medical problem, oh damn. Take care my FRiend.

From the reports out of China and Italy

The elderly (over 70) are most at risk of dying from coronavirus

If a person has diabetes and / or high blood pressure, that increases the deadliness.

Children seem to be less at risk of dying from this.

Some guesses (NOTE: guesses) are that this is because the virus causes the immune system to over-react and that over-reaction is what kills a person.

There have been cases in China (reported today) of people who recovered and then got hit again

This graph - https://cloudsonmars.com/2019-ncov-actual-status/ - click on the analysis at the top - shows that the lethality rate in China has plateaued at 3.75%, while the rest of the world has climbed to 1.8% -- you can't draw firm conclusions from that as - it could be that there are more people who got milder attacks and didn't report it (perhaps in China for fear of being quarantined) or if this is limited to only East Asians (I doubt that as there are deaths in other "races" - but it could be that it is most severe for East Asians

The only things that are sure are:

  1. The older are more at risk
  2. the less healthy and diabetics are more at risk
  3. Hotter places seem to destroy the virus
  4. Like all viral infections overdosing yourself with Vitamins C and A may give you protection
  5. Washing your hands with soap and water regularly is proven to prevent
  6. Not touching your eyes, nose or mouth is important
  7. masks aren't going to prevent you GETTING the virus, but if you get the virus, you should wear the mask to prevent other people getting the virus

Re: So, is it already known how the disease got to Kirkland, Washington?

I live 10 miles from the nursing home.

The essay does not mention that a substantial percentage of the residents who live east of Seattle are Asian.

My own town is 40% foreign born. We have three Korean churches. Hundreds (perhaps thousands) of our residents fly back and forth every year to Korea.

Our largest ethnic group is Asian Indians - but, so far, India seems to have very few cases.

Two of the original cases in King County (Seattle) were traced directly to Wuhan, and six more were repatriated from an Asian cruise ship.

When my kid was in the NICU, the medical staff where very bad at hygiene. The doctors were the worst. I made dang sure they washed in and out of her room. Head Doc was VERY happy with me forcing he students to use sanitizer
