King County picks west Seattle site for quarantine site amid COVID-19 response
KOMO TV Seattle ^ | March 3rd, 2020 | by Matt Markovich, KOMO News reporter

King County has started work on temporary housing for people who may need to be quarantined because of exposure to coronavirus.

The county started moving in trailers Tuesday afternoon in the White Center neighborhood in the 200 block of southwest 112th Street. None of the neighbors in the area had a clue about the temporary housing, and many were asking why was their neighborhood chosen.

Later this week, the county is expected to announce the location of a motel it's buying to house those that also need to be quarantined.

Crews demolished a building to make room for seven or more buildings to provide temporary shelter, and one building could be ready by the end of this week, officials say.

The city of Seattle, which issued a civil emergency proclamation earlier in the day, also announced that it has opened its Joint Information Center, or JIC, to coordinate its response to COVID-19, but all major public health decisions are coming from the Health and Medical Area Command Center run by the state's Public Health Department, located in downtown Seattle.

Looks like Seattle is preparing for mandatory quarantine and isolation.

And it also appears the State of Washington is in charge.

You don’t even need to wait until the quarantine hits California, you can self quarantine at home now. Just get your mom to bring you food and whatever you need and leave it on the doorstep.

“many were asking why was their neighborhood chosen”

Because White Center is where the poor white trash of Seattle live.

You can’t expect anyone North of the Ship Canal to be inconvenienced!

Is the Welcome Wagon going to greet these new residents in the neighborhood? I’m sure the existing residents are thrilled to be getting these new residents.

Repurposing trailers originally meant for homeless.

They must think it's going to get really, really bad to repurpose housing for the homeless https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/covid-19-isolation-site-getting-set-up-white-center/RKPEH5B42JDQBNTNIMWD7SM3HE/

I’m surprised Boeing didn’t offer them some space. Production is down and they could use the cash.

West Seattle is quite nice and I have some conservative friends from the UW who live there. But it is true that most of the college educated people live north of the ship canal and south of the ship canal was where the steel workers and other industrial workers lived. Actually, Dow Constantine, a former Seattle Council Member and big Communist lives in West Seattle. Probably used to be a good place to live and yet be close to organizing the workers.

West Seattle is not bad, White Center is a ghetto - it is North of Burien but South of West Seattle. The only neighborhood in Seattle as bad would be Rainier Beach, but putting it there would be racist.

They say they are looking at multiple sites around the county and will build/procure as much as needed.

They have also purchased a motel.

I’m wondering how much they think they need...

Take a look at a population density map of Seattle and where hospitals and airports are located. White Center has a lower population density and lower traffic than most of Seattle, is right next to Sea-Tac airport and a half hour away from the intensive care facilities in downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill areas.

I haven’t heard anyone talking about not using mass transit to avoid coronavirus. Wonder why?

I agree......why quarantine if it’s “just like the flu”.
