Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is set to become Israel’s largest party, according to exit polls published shortly after voting ended in the country’s third election in a year. However, neither Netanyahu nor his chief rival Benny Gantz are projected a clear Knesset majority.

Voting ended at 10 P.M., and official results are expected as early as Monday overnight.

What does a ruling majority mean? we can have a majority of Republicans in the house and senate and still not get the conservative things we want. I know I’m missing something.

Israel is a unicameral parliament. So a ruling majority gets to do whatever it wants until the next election must be held or members of the ruling coalition defect and join the opposition on a vote of no confidence and the body dissolves. The Yisrael Beiteinu party was part of Bibi’s coalition but defected triggering the several elections in the past year or two.

As I understand it (others please help) in a parliamentary system with many parties, the parties each tend to vote as groups. (Dems do it here, Republicans not so much. See Romney, Collins, Murkowski). I think its quite formalized.

So if one party, like Likud, doesn’t get a majority by itself, it asks another party to join in, so that they have a majority together. IIRC, there is an ultra-orthodox party that has quite a bit of power disproportionate to the number of seats they hold because they often ally with Likud to form a coalition. Of course, there are agreements and concessions, so the parties to the coalition know what to expect from the new government.

Israel has a pure proportional representative parliament. The tendency in this system is for there to be multiple parties with no single party able to grab a majority of seats by itself. So the biggest party in the case Likud joins up with the smaller parties to form a coalition.

There’s party discipline because there is a list made by party leaders of who will represent the party in the Knesset. There’s no geographical districts that can impose a disloyal member on a party.

In the Israeli system, if an MK defects from one party to another, does he retain his seat or is it still controlled by the original party?

Seems like there could be a lot of elections under a system like this.

That’s an important detail.

But the coalitions sometimes break—votes of confidence are known to fail.

Maybe you can fill me in on exactly what the phrase “forming a new government” entails. I’m a bit hazy on that part.

Thanx in advance.

Party leaders are interviewed by the president and recommend someone to be PM. If party leaders representing a majority name one person, that person is named to form a government, naming the heads of departments and coalition members.

If there’s no majority, the president appoints someone to give a first try at forming a coalition. If that fails, someone else can be given a chance.

Netanyahu is going to be tapped by President Rivlin because he’s the leader of the largest party.

Gantz was stupid in turning down a national unity government last year. That ship has sailed.

He keeps his seat, but unless 1/3 of his party also defects he can’t run in the next elections.

Seems like just personal animus against Bibi.

Almost miraculous turn of events. There was some talk that Bernie and Bloomie’s attacks on Bibi, and Gantz people hating on Trump may have tilted a few seats.

“Form a new Government” is the parlance of a parliamentary system. The government in that system is run by a Prime Minister (the head of the majority party). Once the conditions for triggering a new election happens that government still somewhat operates, but then after the election, the parliamentary parties have to come together to select a Prime Minister and then the Ministry (Cabinet) positions and these are often keys to building a ruling coalition. Once there are enough votes to select a Prime Minister (a majority of persons in the parliament), that is when “a new Government” is formed.

Can a MK can vote to support a government against the will of his party or does this have to be a party line vote?

No. He can only leave his party to do it if its not part of the government coalition.

So if the other parties hold firm that one vote could prevent the formation of a government? Likud must make a deal with a party, and not with any of the individual MKs?
