Two Bay Area hospital staffers have been determined "presumptive positive" for coronavirus, public health officials announced.

They are employed by the NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville, where a Solano County woman was treated before being tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Officials said both workers — one from Alameda County, the other from Solano County — had been exposed to the "community-acquired case" hospitalized at UC Davis Medical Center. They are currently in isolation at home and will not return to work until they are cleared.

“We took immediate and comprehensive measures intended to stop any further spread of the virus, including working with public health officials to trace the contacts the two workers may have had,” Aimee Brewer, president of NorthBay HealthCare Group, said in the news release.

In response, Alameda County has declared a local public health emergency, joining San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Diego.

On the same day, officials verified a fourth case of coronavirus in Santa Clara county. According to the county's department of public health, the woman was "a household contact" of the third confirmed case reported Friday.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. A fair number of FReepers live in the SF Bay Area - like myself - so please keep the insults to a minimum!

A second article - about a new case in my neighborhood - coming after this.

This is of note because there was the possibility the initial patient picked it up at Davis. This would indicate not.

SARS was spread in large part by nosocomial transmission - i.e. In hospital or treatment settings.

Ugly day in store on Wall Street tomorrow.

Futures are way down tonight. Market seems to be reacting to every bit of news re: the virus.

I saw where two ambulances showed up at nursing home in WA just a short while ago. Could be routine or could be transporting newly diagnosed persons. If the latter, I imagine there will be an announcement.

A month ago, I asked: "Why in the hell are we allowing people from infected areas to simply fly in?"

I just read that the reason that Italy is ground zero for Europe is because of all the airline passengers that arrived from China.

Eh, I'll make the second article post here, rather than a new thread. FYI, Santa Clara County is pretty much synonymous with "Silicon Valley":
Officials verify fourth coronavirus case in Santa Clara county

A fourth case of COVID-19 in Santa Clara County has been confirmed, the county Public Health Department said Saturday. The person in the newest coronavirus instance "is an adult woman who is a household contact of the third Santa Clara County case" that was announced Friday, the department said in an announcement.

The woman is not hospitalized or ill and is being isolated at home, the department said.

---SNIP---

"We expected more cases of COVID-19 in our county and have been preparing for community transmission," the department said. "Since the disease is here, an important priority for the department will be to conduct community surveillance to determine the extent of local spread. The County Public Health Laboratory has the ability to test for the virus and can identify cases quickly and take appropriate action."

The first case in the county, a male, was announced on Jan. 31, required no hospitalization, and was released from isolation fully recovered on Feb. 20. The second case, announced Feb. 2, remains in home isolation.

---SNIP (& FYI: the 3rd case, a woman with other health conditions, is hospitalized)---

The county has established a coronavirus webpage, https://www.sccgov.org/sites/phd/DiseaseInformation/novel-coronavirus/Pages/home.aspx, that has more information.

Actually, the futures, while down significantly, are only half as bad as on their opening at around 6 PM. But that could be temporary, as virus new items seem to pop up every hour or so.

It appears it can be transmitted to others before the infected person even knows he is infected or only has a very mild case (like a cold or even allergies that mimic a cold).

I wonder if even a 14-day isolation period is enough to prevent transmission.

Two Bay Area hospital workers test ‘presumptive positive’ for coronavirus.

This is the correct way to announce this as ‘presumptive positive’.

CDC’s tests should be available soon for a definitive diagnosis.

“It appears it can be transmitted to others before the infected person even knows he is infected or only has a very mild case (like a cold or even allergies that mimic a cold).”

That’s true of every viral infection.

Often one is most infectious shortly before symptoms hit.

Immune response eventually gives us our sore throats and runny noses etc...

I don’t know but it makes sense if true.

Travel stocks, car rental companies in particular, got hammered last week but in checking rental rates for Spring Break I don’t see any reductions. Something doesn’t add up. It seems the anecdotal stories of travel cancellations are just that.

I was looking at the S&P, mostly. But they’re all going to be moving targets, I’m guessing.
