Science Magazine criticizes CDC Covid-19 testing

The United States badly bungled coronavirus testing—but things may soon improve.

Speed is critical in the response to COVID-19. So why has the United States been so slow in its attempt to develop reliable diagnostic tests and use them widely?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has shipped testing kits to 57 countries. China had five commercial tests on the market 1 month ago and can now do up to 1.6 million tests a week; South Korea has tested 65,000 people so far. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in contrast, has done only 459 tests since the epidemic began. The rollout of a CDC-designed test kit to state and local labs has become a fiasco because it contained a faulty reagent. Labs around the country eager to test more suspected cases—and test them faster—have been unable to do so. No commercial or state labs have the approval to use their own tests.

In what is already an infamous snafu, CDC initially refused a request to test a patient in Northern California who turned out to be the first probable COVID19 case without known links to an infected person.

This is a well-written critique of the CDC response to the Covid-19 virus in the US.

It’s the same article being posted.

It’s Monday morning grandstanding.

People are tested who are at risk.

That’s not many.

472 people have been tested.

Less than 5% actually have had it - 22 total.

They’re worse that incompetent, they’re actively promoting yet another fake crisis that they intend to hang around the president’s neck.

Folks that do not understand the complexity of testing, even “scientists” should stop the media frenzy.
Ist gen tests are full of false positives, false negatives and interfering subtances due to the actual nature of test development. These scientists praising china, should go there and receive care until they breathe their last.
On the other hand, maybe it will bring to light that Hillary and other leftists are the keynote speakers at the main society that provides accreditation for testing personnel.
The china tests are probably accurate if they have the genetic signature from the lab that created it.

36,000 Americans die each year from the flu but FR (and everyone else) is obsessed with this coronavirus which is nothing but a bad head cold!

YOU need to find another topic to entertain yourself.

What is a coronavirus test like? How are CDC kits handled? Here are the details:

https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/health-and-medicine/article240733946.html

Even if this test had been available before tomorrow, basically only a couple of hospital labs in America could even do this test.

Since it basically requires a very high tec lab and people to do the test.

It still has to be sent by to CDC for a real diagnosis.

So how were the so called patients tested and declared that they had the Corona Virus.

Try Presumptive Diagnosis not a real diagnosis.

So we will probably not have any real Definitive Diagnosis of Corona Virus patients until probably after this week is over.

Presumptive Diagnosis are similar to assuming a patient has this virus.

What happens when we assume the results of something that is complicated?

Why work to constrain American ingenuity?

Something going on with North Korea RE:Coronavirus:
(Sorry to step on your topic here!)
From CNN reporter on Twitter:
Will Ripley

#breaking North Korea urges foreign diplomats to leave on Friday. Dozens of foreign diplomats quarantined in Pyongyang, North Korea are planning to take an evacuation flight this Friday, a source inside the country tells me.
The source agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity, given the extreme sensitivity of the current situation in North Korea: “We got a new note [on Saturday] urging missions again to leave and stating [the flight] is scheduled to leave on the 6th [of March],” the source says.
The source says North Korea’s state run airline Air Koryo will operate the flight to evacuate foreign diplomats from from Pyongyang to Vladivostok, Russia. “But as far as I understand this is not agreed yet with the Russians,” the source adds. Russian MOFA won’t confirm to CNN.

Good question. My guess would be that these labs need to be in statistical process control. Given the current low number of cases, I could envision regional test labs certified by the CDC. False positive tests give a patient a scare; False negative tests can lead to infecting others. One needs to make sure one has the capacity to provide timely results while minimizing false negative results.
