Blizzard conditions and the biggest lake effect snow of the season are slamming Western New York.

The National Weather Service calls this lake effect snow band a "monster," stretching for more than 500 miles from northern Michigan to Canada and into Western New York.

The highest snowfall total so far is in Copenhagen, New York, north of Syracuse, where 28.5 inches fell -- and it's still snowing. A blizzard warning is ongoing there.

Meanwhile, brutal wind gusts have climbed to over 60 mph between Buffalo, New York, and Erie, Pennsylvania.

Snow alerts are in effect for nine states Friday morning, from Michigan to Tennessee to New York.

And here in north Idaho we had a very mild winter, now lots of sun lately, and in the low 50 range. Lots of fishing boats starting to head out on the lake. Buds are swelling fast on trees and shrubs, too. Hope they don’t get clobbered by a hard frost.

Our first snow fell in September! And we had two good dumps in October.

Its not a BFD, its winter weather. You would be surprised how the people in upstate NY take it. Its not unexpected. I was in Rochester the 1st week in March years ago and we got hit with 24”, We had to wait it out on I 90 at the Burger King, dug out the next day and waited for the roads to be open. For those from up there I dreaded going there for 12 yrs, it was always the same the 1st 2 weeks in march. Spent the day here shoveling sunshine.

You are right. And along lake Erie. Live east of Rochester NY and sun shining for a change but cold and a trace of an inch of snow so far.

What monster blizzard?
I’m looking out my window and there’s a dusting of snow from yesterday.
If I look at the NOAH weather mosaic there’s barely anything around me (Buffalo, NY) for hundreds of miles.

what a stupid headline

This is not uncommon

winds circulate around the low and form bands over the lakes..and because of the wind direction around the low..NW winds off Superior...east off Michigan...and SE of Erie/Ontario... they are sometimes “connected”

.when they move inland they weaken but can seed the downwind lake set up

Erie often freezes over, the other Great Lakes, much less so. This year, all the Great Lakes are open, and a late winter cold front has hit them just right and is turning that water into heavy snow for some specific places downwind. Happens all the time in winter here.
