Officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the nation’s first coronavirus case of unknown origin Wednesday in Northern California in the latest sign of the virus’ rapid spread. “It is a confirmed case. There is one in Northern California,” CDC spokesman Scott Pauley told The Sacramento Bee just before 4 p.m. Wednesday. Pauley declined to elaborate.

My bet is the “astute clinician” suspected the patient was lying through his/her teeth about recent travel and/or contacts.

On a serious note, if we’ve got people lying to public health officials, that will pose one mother of a problem.
It’s probably been in the US for awhile.
The CDC had a ban on domestic testing unless they were traveling or in known contact with someone infected.
What gets me is the number of links in the chain of information about this virus that are susceptible to overwhelming deep state or communist influence.

You are dead on in raising this. If this disease gets into the substantial homeless communities in San Francisco or Los Angeles, many more Americans (not least among the homeless there, who are also Americans) may die.
