The parliament in Scotland approved a proposal to make sanitary products available for free to all women, becoming the first country in the world to pass such a measure.
The goal of the policy is to end "period poverty" and enable public places such as community centers, youth clubs and pharmacies to widely offer sanitary products, a provision that may cost up to $31.2 million (24.1 million pounds), according to Reuters.
The measure, called the Period Products (Free Provision) Scotland Bill, received initial approval with 112 votes in favor and none against. The bill will now move onto the second step in which the Scottish parliament can introduce amendments to the legislation.
Monica Lennon, the bill's leading proponent, said that passage of the bill is a major step for equality, calling it a "milestone moment for normalizing menstruation in Scotland and sending out that real signal to people in this country about how seriously parliament takes gender equality."
Another lawmaker in favor of the legislation asked, "Why is it in 2020 that toilet paper is seen as a necessity but period products aren't? Being financially penalized for a natural bodily function is not equitable or just."
Scotland also became the first nation to provide free sanitary products for students back in 2018, a provision that aimed to help an estimated 395,000 students.

Is toilet paper "free" in Scotland? Is paying for something you use a punishment? Should the government determine what kinds of tampons women use?
Universal suffrage may not be such a good idea.
Why not make everything free?
The Scots won’t stay-free forever if they keep upping the ante of freebies for their people.
Western societies are becoming cargo cults, with ignorant populations that believe free stuff just magically appears on the island.
Isn’t it bigoted to say that “women” use menstrual products? What about the “transsexual” people who may identify as men, but still menstruate? I recall talk of the need for menstrual products in men’s rooms in colleges for this very reason, because some who identity as male use these products.
Who needs toilet paper if you wipe with your fingers?
That’s why we need to import more ‘immigrants’.
Here in Texas anti-deodorant is sales tax free,
So for Scotland would that translate into exemption from VATs? Because free stuff never only cost as much as paid for.
So they really are not free. No company is producing this product shipping it there and handing them out for “free’. The Government is going to buy them with the money they took from you in taxes and turn around and hand them out to you.
Oh, yeah. This will end well.
It’s not about that. It’s about equality. Apparently women shouldn’t have to pay for something that men don’t require. Equality. But if the misguided notion that men have periods too becomes widespread....what then? lol
Dear Government: I'd like breakfast in bed...and a maid to clean my apt once a week. Thank you in advance.
I keep telling yinz that if Scotland were to ever declare independence they’d be somewhere between Cuba and Venezuela on the global political continuum.
Manufacturers can now double prices!
I consider food to be pretty necessary too. I cannot live without a large supply of bacon. I think Bacon should be free especially peppered bacon.

In my part is Texas, we are pro-deodorant.
Last time I was over there I came home convinced that the Highlands should be let go.
If they do vote to leave, the lowlands could very well split away from the highlands-or below Glassgow, Edinburgh line, will vote to stay within the present UK and let the upper part go their own way.
This has been ongoing since the ‘45’ and the Great Highland clearances. England has a lot of blame to share on this
Prince Charles can’t be everywhere.
paging Arlen Specter ...
Dang, that was a sneaky typo I just committed.
I got antiperspirant and deodorant jumbled.
