Problems with a government-created coronavirus test has limited the U.S. capacity to rapidly increase testing, just as the outbreak has entered a worrisome new phase in countries around the world. While South Korea has run more than 35,000 coronavirus tests, the U.S. has tested only 426 people for the virus, not including people who returned on evacuation flights. Only a handful of state laboratories can currently run tests outside of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta because the CDC kits sent out nationwide a week and a half ago included a faulty component.

Are the test kits faulty, or is the virus mutating too quickly for the tests to stay caught up?
Well, isn’t that just Peachy...

other countries aren’t have the problem
It does limit the number of confirmed cases to well below the panic level...Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
It does limit the number of confirmed cases to well below the panic level...
How convenient!
I’m curious what is the “faulty component”?
Hawaii, a likely first place that will get this, and where returning passengers exposed to corona virus have been funneled, has no test kits and can’t get any from the United States. They are now trying to get them from Japan.
Im curious what is the faulty component?
What companies make these test kits? Why are ours different then other countries? Why can’t we import more?
It doesn’t make any sense
So with defective detection kits, we have no way to know how serious is the national infection rate ?
If you can't accurately detect the infectious problem, there is no way you will find it !
This is bloody stupid !
The situation with the defective kits should be corrected ..YESTERDAY !
This is a huge problem .
I think other nations use other tests and xrays to screen .
How have we been screening so far.
Faulty tests results and we are letting people walk!

Oh by the way no one in Hawaii has been tested despite two Japanese Tourist testing positive shortly after roaming the island because of the test kit shortage
How have we been screening so far.
The CDC wanted to start testing people in the major cities that showed flu symptoms but tested negative for the flu...but that has been delayed because of the test kit shortage
Another point to ponder: “Are these buffoons government employees, or are they scientists, first?
“Are they given their positions thru their expertise, or thru the usual government promotion practices of the 1980’s?”
I wonder how many people make decisions base on if the virus has arrive or not arrive in there area?
Example: Dining out, hockey game, church etc...
Should we just go ahead and lock down without any indication of the virus?
I found this.

It would seem that they don’t know and say it’s “reagents or enzymes”.
And the last that I heard (the conversation between Hawaii and CDC) was they were hoping to have a corrected test by MID-MARCH
We need to get some private entities on this stat. Dr. Gottlieb has been saying almost daily we need to be testing, and the FDA can work with other institutions to develop this, and fast track it (he would know, was head of the FDA for 2 hrs)
FDA can play important role building on proactive posture that CDRH has always taken in times of public health challenge to help advance alternatives to the CDC test to back up CDC process should that continue to be delayed. This includes academic and public health lab LDTs.

Yeah, why is the CDC having issues and other countries are able to test?
This does’t look good for us. We should be state of the art.

that is what happened in Iran...(which is now in deep trouble)
I read that our kits are faulty.
Gee...why is that, CDC?
Why are other countries able to test hundreds/day, with good kits?
