On one side of Interstate 980 in Oakland rise the new glass skyscrapers of the citys Uptown neighborhood, home to a bustling entertainment district and Silicon Valleys spillover tech startups. On the other lies West Oakland, a food desert where two-thirds of residents live below the poverty line.
West Oakland residents should be able to benefit from the growing number of amenities available in Uptown, since they technically live in walking distance. But crossing the 560-foot-wide interstate and two frontage roads is a daunting task. Its a prime example of one of Americas most divisive freewaysliterally.

Glad to see the concept of the “wrong side of the tracks” is alive and well.
Seems to me I-980 is doing its job very well. People that think like the writer of this screed are sick puppies that are the scourge of this nation.
“But crossing the 560-foot-wide interstate and two frontage roads is a daunting task.”
Should be a couple of moats and barbed wire too.
When a ‘study’ repeatedly refers to its sponsor in an attempt to legitimize its ‘findings,’ they lose all credibility with me.
Methinks most of us wish that this writer’s dreams would come true.
But we know what would really happen.
Always remember that if a progressive touches it, it turns to shi...er.. Obamastuff.
Always.
In every universe.
Forever and forever.
Amen. :-)
I’ll bet that whoever wrote this doesn’t have to commute to and from work over jammed freeways and surface streets every day.
Claymores, anyone?
Fougas?
San Fransisco is way ahead of the curve, no freeways and no parking spaces...
Fougas in CA may spark a wild fire.
Removing it would cause massive, massive issues, basically cutting off your face in spite of your nose.
Plenty of ghetto on both sides of 275 going north from the 275/4 junction.
LOL...you can't be serious?
Sure take one hour commute and turn it into 2 hour commute. .
The long term liberal goal is to ban private transportation. Short of that, they will make automobile usage as difficult as possible. That is why they want to restrain suburban growth and private home ownership. The long term goal is to force 85-90% of the population into crowded, densely populated urban centers where they can be more closely monitored and controlled. Meanwhile, the elite will have their spacious mansions in gated communities, armed private security, high end vehicles, and the finest food. Meanwhile, most of the population will be living in squalor, well watched by the mid-21st Century version of the KGB. The proles will be dumbed down, overmedicated, and subject to unremitting propaganda.

Wow.
That “writer” is a whack job.
Yeah, and if you are coming through the Caldecott Tunnel on your way to the Oakland Airport or the Colliseum, 980 connects you to Hwy 17 to get you there timely. Any of the surface streets will slow you way down. Of course you could take BART...
