Arrgghh! Screwed that up.

Reports saying China is building 19 new hospitals.

Can anyone confirm that from a reliable source? (It may be upthread and I missed it?)

Why if the cases are going down.

Not that I think the Chinese numbers can be trusted, but, even if those numbers just give some sense of trends, China has, what, maybe 100k infected people, plus "confirmed cases", "out there" at a minimum. Maybe it is more like half a million infections & cases not yet tabulated? That number should decline if they continue the strong confinement and quarantine actions, but they CAN'T go on with the country half shut down. That will lose them more people than the virus. Much less the other effects of a wrecked economy.

And, I do mean wrecked. No tiddledywinks "Great Depression" for you here...

So, even if they have this epidemic slowed at the moment, they have to "go back to work" making stuff, transporting it, and so on. That will lead to more cases -- remember that at present only a tiny fraction of the populace has been infected. China has to hope they can do some sort of tightrope act of slowing the virus without doing too much economic harm, and maybe accept, say, the equivalent of a very bad flu year x 5, on top of other health care needs, on an ongoing basis. If a vaccine can be developed, maybe that gets things down to a 2x very bad flu year added on, per year.

But, just consider: Even if all you want is to not lose too many of your professional class and Party members, how many new hospitals would that take in a country of 1.3 billion people?

A simple instruction, know them by their acts. Their acts border on desperation and are not justified by the statistics promulgated by the government. The only logical conclusion is things are MUCH worse then the governments let on.

Low bond yields = high prices for the bonds themselves. People worldwide are leaving other stores of value and buying US Treasuries and gold.

Nuff said.

Oh, and Apple, and the chipmakers, are showing double-top chart patterns.

It seems you are very concerned or upset about this issue, but I am entitled to post information like everyone else, so don't try to start something with me.

I don’t even pay attention to China anymore, information from there is useless.

South Korea is the country that bears watching now. We should get a much more accurate picture of just what this thing is going to do.

When we have a flu pandemic we will be sure to call for your expertise. We are not dealing with a flu here.

"I think this is going to surpass the regular flu."

Please get back to me when US coronavirus deaths surpass regular flu deaths, i. e. 80,000 US flu deaths two winters ago. Long way to go as currently the number is zero.

RE: "When we have a flu pandemic..."

I don't recall hearing much concern two winters ago about the US death toll. So get back to me and we can commiserate together...

CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter [2017-18] in U.S., highest death toll in 40 years

You don’t get it. And you don’t want to. You are fixated on the flu.

Please do a little objective reading. It’s not about dying. It’s about the system being overwhelmed and then seizing.

But, keep spouting flu facts. They are interesting, I guess.

China's official numbers currently give a mortality rate of ~10%. That number is really high for any virus, and that's with heavily fudged Chinese numbers. Even if they're accurate, 50M who are still in the infected list means there's at least another 5000 yet to die.

China has, on average, 20M people die per day. (~7MM per year.) They aren't shutting down major industrial cities because 1/4 of their daily deaths have died over two months. If we extrapolate from the leaked tencent numbers from a month ago, the current deaths is around 180M. And I would guess it's probably higher than that.

By then you’ll be too busy trying to find food and other essentials, and having to stand in line with sick people, so I doubt you’ll have much time to check back here.

But don’t worry, we won’t miss you!

You don’t know what Coronavirus is doing in/to China: both their economy and global supply chains.
People are being ordered to go back to work and not complying.
Secondly, the virus is aerosolized, transmissible without symptoms, and can re-infect those cleared if it, with the second infection being more dangerous than the first.
And 15%-20% of those infected require hospitalization or the intensive care unit. That will crash any medical system.

Not 180M.
That’s 1/8 of their population.
I’d guess on the order of one-to-several hundred thousand dead so far.

Huh? it's not even close to 1/8th the population. It's not even 1/8th of Wuhan city (~11MM total)

180M / 11MM = ~1/60th the city
180M / 1.44B = ~1/8000th of China
