Italy reports second coronavirus death as infections worldwide pass 77,000

A man named by Italian news agency Ansa as former construction company owner Adriano Trevisan, in his late 70s, was among almost 60 suspected or confirmed cases in Italy so far.

The father-of-three died at a hospital in Padua, in the Veneto region in northern Italy, where he had been admitted along with another person who has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

A second patient - a woman - then died hours after in Lombardy, a region also in the north.

The deaths have prompted local authorities in Lombardy and Veneto to shut schools, businesses and restaurants.

Two dead Italians. My feeling is that from an epidemiological perspective, the impact of the coronavirus inside China is likely the tip of the iceberg, given that the Chinese are likely to be highly resistant to its effects, due to tens of thousands of years of frequent exposure. They eat things fairly often that just about zero non-Chinese consider to be food - pangolins and bats that are hosts for the coronavirus. Expecting non-Chinese to be immune to the coronavirus is like expecting pre-Columbian Indians with no exposure to smallpox to be less vulnerable than the conquistadors who passed it on to them.

This is why we may eventually need a much more comprehensive quarantine (including involuntary confinement) applied to anyone of whatever ethnicity or race emerging from China. The likelihood is that if people outside of China are infected in any numbers, the body counts will dwarf what we’ve seen in China, much as natives in the Americas died like flies from smallpox.

The Chinese government is said to be providing “free” care to coronavirus patients. Yet a Chinese film director was turned away. When someone who’s presumably wealthy and influential gets turned away, you gotta wonder how much pull you need to be admitted.

Bottom line is that nobody knows what the Chinese numbers are. They may be 10x what the government is admitting to. Nobody knows. 4 have died in South Korea, and its number of known infections is at 556, where outcomes are still pending.

Which report are you talking about? 2 Italians are dead out of 62 known infections. 5 Iranians are dead out of 28 known infected. We have 34 known coronavirus cases stateside, of which outcomes are still to be determined, given that most were infected recently, and the virus can take a month to kill its host.

The Italian sports ministry has announced that ALL sporting events in the Regions of Lombardia and Veneto have been canceled until further notice.

That includes 3 Serie A soccer matches. One of those is in Milan, where attendance is usually over 60,000. Postponing a major Sunday match in Italy is a very big deal.

Reactions of governments hiding the truth about the seriousness of this disease have given me all the information I needed. This virus is really bad and China specifically has not come out and directly said so. The illness is far worse in the way it shows symptoms (or doesn't) and infects people.

It is far worse when one is sick with it than they are telling people. And, the mortality rate is worse and HEALTHY people who should be able to weather it are DYING. The coverup is so the very rich can move their assets to safety as much as possible before panic sets in and all hell breaks loose. The record lows on Treasury bond yields (very few understand what that means) and the sharp uptick in the price of gold tell me all I need to know about that. Batten down the hatches. It's going to be a rough ride.
