Former Vice President Joe Biden has taken to describing his supposed arrest in South Africa at least three times in the past two weeks as he speaks to voters and seeks the Democratic presidential nomination.
Biden has been claiming that he was arrested in the 1970s by South African authorities while he sought to visit Nelson Mandela in prison, The New York Times reported Friday.
This day, 30 years ago, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and entered into discussions about apartheid, Biden told supporters in South Carolina last week, according to the Times. I had the great honor of meeting him. I had the great honor of being arrested with our U.N. ambassador on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see him on Robbens Island.
Biden would have been a Democratic senator from Delaware at that time and any arrest would probably have been noted in the U.S. media, but the Times did not find any relevant references in its archives.

Dilbert's term for it. Everybody knows one. I have no particular affection for Gropin' Joe but this is starting to make me cringe. Time for that porch swing at the rest home where he can regale the other patients with his adventures.
Biden was also arrested by racist Republican British soldiers when he was marching through India with Gandhi!
My Democratic neighbors tried to visit South Africa in the 1970’s, but the South Africans wouldn’t let them in.
Their British travel friend was admitted into the country.
Was there ever a real chain of events to make the embellishments upon? Like an addled old sea captain, Joe is making up yarns that sound plausible, if not logical, but lack any kind of corroborating evidence.
Perhaps he really believes it happened. Show us the photos, Joe. And remember, we can check for photoshops.
Oh, okay. This should be easy to confirm. Who was our UN Ambassador at the time? He or she can confirm being arrested along with Biden.
Third rate actors and actorettes garner front page headlines when they get arrested for meaningless causes. You'd think a sitting US Senator and Ambassador getting arrested would at least generate a mention in the news.
Joe can’t remember where he was yesterday and is today.
There is no way he could remember where he was in the 1970’s!
Better arrested than necklaced I always say.
Andrew Young was the UN Ambassador and is disputing Biden's claim.
FTA
No, I was never arrested and I dont think he was, either, Young told the New York Times. Now, people were being arrested in Washington. I dont think there was ever a situation where congressmen were arrested in South Africa.
And you can keep your doctor.......!
Sounds like ole Joe was a member of the CIA LSD program.
Not Sniffy Pop but Smoke Pop (look him up).
This is just plain weird. Gropin’ Joe has spent most of his life rubbing elbows and hairy legs with world leaders, travelling to exotic lands, participating in world-altering legislation and experiencing historic events, yet, he has to make sh*t up to bring any semblance of meaning to his life.
The South African government would not have been so stupid to arrest either a sitting US Senator or a US UN Ambassador, it would have created a major diplomatic incident and would be totally unnecessary. I suspect the next claim Lyin’ Joe will make is that he is actually the Lindbergh baby but since he is so forgiving and magnanimous he has no ill will toward those who did it.
Uh, ouch!
MP: But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.
That’s the one! Thank you.
