Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would give the federal government access to the entirety of the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) database, except for Social Security numbers.
“I would give them anything but the Social Security numbers,” the governor said during an interview with the WAMC radio station on Friday.
“The Social Security numbers are the indicator of documented or undocumented, and I will never give them the Social Security numbers in the DMV database—over my dead body will I do that.”
The new offer comes after an apparent stalemate in negotiations between New York state and the Trump administration, which banned New Yorkers from trusted traveler programs earlier this month because state officials stopped sharing information from the DMV with immigration enforcement agencies.
“We no longer have access to make sure that they meet those program requirements, so we need to do our job,” acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Chad Wolf said during an appearance on Fox News, saying that’s why New York residents can’t join or stay in the programs.
The decision to block access to the DMV database was part of a recent law that New York passed. Another part of the law lets illegal immigrants apply for driver’s licenses.
Cuomo’s previous offer, according to his public comments, was to let the federal government access the DMV database “on a case by case basis” and only for people who enroll in trusted traveler programs (TTP).
“You want to look at our DMV database for TTP enrollees, fine, because a TTP enrollee is going to sit with the federal government anyway to do an interview,” he said on the radio last week.

He doesn’t get the fact that these undocumented people aren’t verified by the state, they just self-report and you have no idea if the identity indicated is real, that’s why homeland has to know their identity status.
Why is the state DMV office collecting social security numbers in the 1st place? Is not Social Security Administration a federal agency?
Pretending that he doesn’t know that a significant reason for it is to detect the undocumented.
It’s time to charge state and local public officials with obstruction of justice. Let THOSE mass arrests begin. Just post federal marshals at the exits of government buildings ten minutes after posted opening times.

It’s dangerous times when a governor says he will die rather than identify criminal aliens - millions of them.
And national security is involved.
He’s admitting the suicidal security system is being defrauded.
I meant social security system, but maybe it is “suicidal”.
Allowing your AG to target the President, his family, and businesses in the name of partisanship has consequences. Doing the same while your state circumvents immigration law and then expecting the same President to bend over to “help you out” is comical.
While I generally support states rights, there are several states who have clearly demonstrated that they cannot be trusted when it comes to issues of immigration, an area where they have NO power or authority. Ironically, I would be willing to bet that a majority of people in New York support the President’s position on this topic so the pressure will remain on Cuomo to cave.
The President did not inconvenience New York residents. Cuomo and his ilk did.

Why is New York collecting those in the first place for a driver’s license? That was supposed to be illegal according to the social security laws.

SSN was never intended as an “internal passport” identifier. States should NOT be requiring it nor using it for anything.
Yeah, that horse was let out of the barn a long time ago, when the Social Security Administration became the de facto National ID and Citizen Tracking Administration.
I'd bet that even with my limited Excel skills, I could do a search of this database for duplicate SS#s.
