Governors Across U.S. Step Up Push To Legalize Marijuana In Their States
Forbes ^ | Feb 11, 2020 | Tom Angell

State legislatures across the U.S. have convened for new sessions over the past month, and a growing number of governors are taking steps to push lawmakers to include legalizing marijuana as part of their 2020 agendas.

At least 10 governors have gone so far as to put language ending marijuana prohibition in their annual budget requests, or used their State of the State speeches to pressure legislators to act on cannabis reform.

Some are proactively addressing the issue, while others appear to be mostly reacting to support that has already built up among lawmakers. But altogether, it’s clear that top state executives are now taking marijuana more seriously than ever before.

Here’s a look at how governors are taking action on marijuana as 2020 legislative sessions get underway. […]

Connecticut

Gov. Ned Lamont (D) and leading lawmakers are pushing to make 2020 the year that Connecticut legalizes cannabis.

During his State of the State address, the governor spoke about how marijuana legalization in nearby states makes it illogical to continue prohibition. “Like it or not, legalized marijuana is a short drive away in Massachusetts and New York is soon to follow,” he said. “Right now do you realize that what you can buy legally in Massachusetts right across the border can land you in prison here in Connecticut for up to a year?”

To that end, Lamont has partnered with governors from neighboring states to develop a regional approach to cannabis.

On the governor’s behalf, the Senate president and House speaker have filed a bill to legalize marijuana in Connecticut, and Lamont’s budget proposal includes funding for new state employees to craft and implement a regulatory system for cannabis. […]

Didn’t see Pennsylvania mentioned in the article, but the lieutenant governor has been singularly focused on this issue as well.

The next civil rights effort is going to be a push to change employment law to force employers to hire or retain workers who won’t pass, or fail a drug test because of weed.

Marijuana prohibition is effectively over.

There may be a state or two that lag, but 40+ will have it legal, or be on the road with intent to be legal, by the end of this year.

Within two years the Federal prohibition will be removed.

And the remaining do-gooders will howl with grief and anger.

Having a large group of citizens doped up on a regular basis makes them more dependent on government and more compliant. Any extra tax income is just icing on the objective.

Is the greed for taxes that high?

Nowadays when a pol does the right thing for the wrong reasons, we need to take the win.

What’s next cocaine?

Not any time soon.

They're already doing that. Even right here on this thread.

Many citizens were getting regularly doped up even before legalization; legalizing states have seen modest if any increases in use.

makes them more dependent on government and more compliant.

Is that why alcohol is legal?

Exactly, and now we have “walkers” and the walking dead every turn you take, from the biggest cities to the smallest. An entire generation or two of dope heads that find that living on the street is acceptable.

Anyone that cannot connect the dots is a complete and utter fool.

Pot makes kids lazy and retards their intellectual curiosity. Thus, it is easier to make them Bernie-Bots. I have known lots of genX doctors and engineers who smoked daily and seemed highly functional, but it seems almost every millenial I know only wants to smoke pot and game and maybe watch TV. They seem to have no hobbies, or other interests, and with few exceptions are not self motivated to create and advance their own careers. The ones that are self motivated are stunningly successful presumably because of lack of competition

Yup, drug abuse existed even while marijuana was universally criminalized. When in a hole, stop digging.

We have gone round and round on this... but it is an absolute and total disaster where we live in Washington State. I am not even talking about the annoying pervasive skunk like smell that you can’t get away from around town. We now have obnoxious youth blowing marijuana smoke in your face when you try to go in a store. We have people breaking windows on older cars looking for pot. We have bums pulling the garbage out of cans and dumpsters looking for pot. I could go on and on and never scratch the surface. Marijuana has turned into a blight where we live. I don’t give a rat’s behind what people do in the privacy of their own homes, but once marijuana is legalized... it turns into a constant in your face show that people who have not experienced it cannot even imagine. And lets not even get into the damage it causes to our youth...

So it's something other than the pot.

You are so full of sh@t that it is not even funny. The marijuana shops around here are so busy that they have to hire people to direct the customers where to park. I never could have imagined the situation that has developed.

Young people have been reporting since well before any state had legalized that they could get marijuana almost as easily as cigarettes or beer, although the latter two are much more widespread among adults. This evidence indicates that the best way of keeping a drug away from young people is to legalize it for adults - which gives its sellers an economic incentive to confine their sales to adults, namely the risk of losing their legal adult market.
