Players on the U.S. women’s national team are seeking more than $66 million in damages as part of their gender discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation.
The damages were included in slew of papers filed Thursday night in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles ahead of a trial scheduled to start May 5.
Among the documents filed were the separate collective bargaining agreements of the U.S. men’s and women’s teams, which had not previously been made public.
Players on the women’s national team sued the federation last March alleging institutionalized gender discrimination that includes inequitable compensation between the men’s and women’s teams.
Each side in the class-action lawsuit asked for a summary judgment in their favor. The estimate of damages, including interest, was provided by Finnie Bevin Cook, an economist from Deiter Consulting Group, which was retained by the suing players.
The collective bargaining agreements showed a disparity in bonuses but also highlighted the different pay structures between the two teams.

If they were drawing 50,000 fans to 3/4’s of their games....they might have some kind of case. But you can go and select any of their games from the past five years, and the average non-title games barely draw 10,000 fans.
If they win this...the first thing I’d do as the International Soccer ‘body’...is let them go, and suggest they need to organize their own sales.
I’m all for equal pay for equal work, but if they aren’t drawing in paying fans at the same rate as their male counterparts, they aren’t doing equal work.

I don’t have a dog in this fight. But what part of “collective bargaining AGREEMENT” don’t they get?
My understanding is the women’s soccer teams actually get a higher % of the gate proceeds than do the men.
If some renegade court finds in favor of the women and if it were up to me to decide I would dissolve the current representative organization of the Mens and Women’s Soccer League and let them each form their own separate organizations. Let each League determine how proceeds are shared among it’s teams.
I’m not a lawyer, but it’s my understanding that courts are very reluctant to impose legal remedies that override contracts. How the hell do you sign a contract that two parties agree to abide by — and which has the force of law behind it — and then claim that you don’t like the terms?

In pure numbers, women’s soccer teams do pull a better chunk of money than men’s soccer teams....in terms of gate-money. Part of this I think....some arenas or stadiums are desperate for more games, and willing to sign better gate-conditions to fill up the place.
Another side of this discussion is TV-money, which the women’s games are not really pulling in the big-cash (and may never achieve that).
Once we get some Trans-players into the women’s league....things might get more interesting, and draw more fans.

Lord - I hope so. Then REALLY watch the sparks fly when the teams will pay $900,000 for the transgender, and the top woman gets $200,000.

I’m pretty sure they are going to some Obama appointed judge to rule free market concepts like supply and demand are unconstitutional. These lesbians are saying F you, pay me.

IF the game is good enough people will pay to see. What the market is telling the gals is the market isn't willing to pay to see them.
Do I care about soccer? No. But since some group of title 9s think it applies to pro style sports I say just have one team. Everyone is “equal” then and each gets paid on abilities and not their physical make up.
Supply and demand. More people pay to see the men play.
Women are independent and empowered. Until they decide they can use their sex against us. Then they sue.
