In the capital, Seoul, officials banned major downtown rallies and shut down a big park to avoid mass public gatherings where the virus could spread. Workers in protective gear also sprayed disinfectant in the citys subway.
Most of the new cases have been reported since Wednesday. The spike, especially in and around Daegu city, has raised fears the outbreak is overwhelming the regions medical system. Many of the cases have been linked to a church in the city.

Lock down US bases. Protect Americans.
The first case in Daegu was reported on Tuesday. By Friday, the area had 153...
Most of those cases have been linked to a single house of worship, a branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, where a woman in her 60s attended two services before testing positive for the virus.
Health and city officials say the woman eyed as a potential transmitter at the church had contact with some 1,160 people, both at the church and at a restaurant and a hospital where she was treated for injuries from a car accident.
The first two cases in the countrys 600,000-member military also sprung up on separate bases Friday, bringing added concern. A sailor on Jeju Island and an army officer in North Chungcheong province both tested positive. Both had made recent visits to Daegu, officials said.
Wow - shes the ultimate supper spreader ...
Apparently, VERY contagious.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
“Apparently, VERY contagious.”
In before Moonbeam and the “But the Flu Crowd”!
Darn. I’m flying to South Korea from Bangkok Tuesday!
No worries, then I’m off to New York City. Feel like I’m playing Rissian Roulette.
Wear a mask.
Take about five with you, at least. And a pair of glasses or sunglasses.
And a small bottle of hand sanitizer.
Korean Air has a partnership with Delta and flies to most major cities in China including Wuhan.
Here is a partial NYT article from Feb. 18.
While Delta is on the list, their partner Korean Air that flies China routes is not.
I did check and Korea Air has cancelled most China flights. I’ll be flying over China, but not landing.
Airlines Suspend China Flights Due to Coronavirus Outbreak
By Reuters
Feb. 18, 2020
(Reuters) - Airlines are suspending flights to China in the wake of the new coronavirus outbreak.
Below are details (in alphabetical order):
AIRLINES THAT HAVE CANCELLED ALL CHINA FLIGHTS
-American Airlines - extends suspension of China and Hong Kong flights through April 24 from March 27 earlier
-Air France - Said on Feb.6 it would suspend flights to and from mainland China for much of March
-Air Seoul - The South Korean budget carrier suspended China flights from Jan. 28 until further notice.
-Air Tanzania - Tanzania’s state-owned carrier, which had planned to begin charter flights to China in February, postponed its maiden flights.
-Air Mauritius - Suspended all flights to China and Hong Kong
-Austrian Airlines - until end-February.
-British Airways - Jan. 29-March 31.
-Delta Airlines - Feb. 2-April 30
I’d try to get out of it...I already blew off a vacation to Asia this month, just based on what I was hearing in January.
The virus seems to be like the Stuxnet (computer) virus, it quietly hides (in people, in this case), and then strikes big-time when it finds a target. I doubt it can be contained...so are only real hope is to avoid getting it until (and if) we can get a vaccine shot.
Just take comfort in the fact that the Wuhan plague will hit New York first through you instead of a red state.
Add me to your ping list plz
BIG run up in cases, happening in South Korea.
...
It’s a cluster of cases centered at a church.
Stop misleading people.
They have had 200 new cases in two days, centered at a church, a prison, two air force bases, and another city nearby.
They do not know all of the contacts.
Thanks for your feedback.
I’ve just spent 6 weeks traveling here, much of it in remote areas near the Thailand, Laos and Vietnam border with China.
Maybe I should now follow the Democrat primary election circuit for a few weeks, just in case./s
