Coronavirus-infected Americans flown back to US on plane full of healthy people

The 14 coronavirus-stricken Americans evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan were flown back to the US on a plane full of healthy people against advice from the CDC, a report said Thursday.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials argued the 14 infected Diamond Princess passengers shouldn’t be flown back with the about 300 virus-free people — but ultimately lost the battle to the US State Department, according to The Washington Post.

“It was like the worst nightmare,” an anonymous senior U.S. official involved in the decision told the paper.

“Quite frankly, the alternative could have been pulling grandma out in the pouring rain, and that would have been bad, too.”

Trump needs to squash the State Department slugs that allowed this. They need to be escorted off government premises. Better yet...quarantine them with the cruise ship passengers that have been returned to the USA.

I said that somewhat tongue in cheek. Someone posted the other day that we had nothing to worry about because the government had enough masks. They had a million of them.

I have to laugh. On this conservative site there are people actually believing that our government will provide for them. And that our government will always tell them the truth.

Sometimes people on both sides of the political aisle are just different versions of the same dumb creatures. [shaking my head.]

PA Engineer dropped a picture of the plane in a post a minute before yours. Looks like lots of masks for everybody, and the CDC/State staff have a full protective suit. Light one, but still full coverage.

Assuming those numbers are flu-like, and not MERS-like, or worse, ebola-like, then it might make sense to just let it escape into the general population throughout the world, especially since that looks likely to happen anyway. Hundreds of thousands of people die each winter of the flu complications and we get by without shutting down world commerce. That might be the best way to go with this coronavirus too, and we should soon have answers from the Princess situation.

I don't think this is quite the best way to handle it. Going off of the Chinese official numbers, and extrapolated numbers from the tencent leaked data, the mortality rate is currently between 11% and 94%. Either of those are HUGE numbers to just let the virus go willy-nilly.

Well, if the low number is even 10% you’re right. I don’t know where you’re getting your numbers, and I don’t believe the reported numbers from China myself, but they are massive recoveries and nearly no deaths in all of the other provinces besides Hubei.

As I said, the 600 cases taken off the Princess and hospitalized in Japan should give us the best indication of how lethal the virus is. By your numbers, 66 to 540 of that 600 will die. It could approach the low end, but do you really believe anything like the high end of your claim is even remotely realistic?

And again, as I said, after we have the information from the Princess cohort, we might better understand whether efforts for containment should be abandoned, particularly given that it seems to spread very easily which makes containment difficult.

I saw the picture after I posted, although it’s confusing because another report claimed that the passengers on the planes weren’t notified until an hour before landing that some people on the planes were confirmed cases.

With a box like that up front, wouldn’t the question have come up right away? Maybe the other report was just wrong? Lots of that going around.

The official Chinese numbers have been getting posted here: https://ncov.dxy.cn/ncovh5/view/pneumonia?scene=2. The extrapolated numbers are based off of the tencent leaked data from 2-3 weeks ago (my post history has more details when it happened). In a nutshell, the leaked numbers showed recoveries at half the official number, and deaths were 70x higher. While Chinese numbers are certainly way off (even if they tried to be truthful, I don't think they have any idea of actual numbers), these leaked numbers matched the Chinese actions (whole-city quarantines) much better than the official couple hundred deaths (in a country that has an average 20M people die each day).

It'll give us an idea of how lethal it is, given a modern country with modern medicine and not overwhelmed temporary hospitals with no sanitation or anything. I'd fully expect the death rate to be lower than the real Chinese one.
And I do think the high end of my range (94%) is realistic, but not with this virus. That is based on leaked numbers, from likely faked data, faked off of unsure numbers to begin with. It is simply the absolute maximum number we can get from Chinese reports. My guess is the final result is gonna be somewhere around 20% - maybe 5-10% for most demographics, balanced by a 25-30% Chinese rate. (Their numbers are gonna be relatively higher from additional factors like overcrowding, lack of real medicine, air pollution, smoking rates, etc.)

Of course, the Chinese numbers are extremely fudged anyway, with many of the past deaths already attributed elsewhere, and many 'found bodies' simply incinerated and no testing or cause of death at all. And, their population numbers aren't accurate anyway, so you can't even compare death rates from this year to previous years and read the spike.
