Coronavirus-infected Americans flown back to US on plane full of healthy people

The 14 coronavirus-stricken Americans evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan were flown back to the US on a plane full of healthy people against advice from the CDC, a report said Thursday.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials argued the 14 infected Diamond Princess passengers shouldn’t be flown back with the about 300 virus-free people — but ultimately lost the battle to the US State Department, according to The Washington Post.

“It was like the worst nightmare,” an anonymous senior U.S. official involved in the decision told the paper.

“Quite frankly, the alternative could have been pulling grandma out in the pouring rain, and that would have been bad, too.”

Enroute, the Japanese relayed that tests of 14 had come back positive. Once the buses arrived, these guys were separated out, rather than return them to the ship. And the passengers went through another screening: (skip to about 1 min in) (notice the isolation box and the inflight screening area separated by a ‘curtain’ - looks like the negative no-symptoms got a green wristband?)

Does this make anyone else think someone was willing to stoop this low to
make President Trump look bad?

I can't believe they did this. A closed environment like that, it was
just asking for trouble.

When this hits the fan, I wouldn't want to be in the person's shoes who

My present “take”, subject to change as more info. comes in, goes like this:

I’ll assume the flu this year is approximately as bad as last year. (If solid numbers otherwise are available, someone please inform us.)

ON AVERAGE, 65 - 70% of hospital beds, ICU’s, and advanced respiratory aid are in use — this must be higher in a bad flu season, but I’m not sure how much higher. I’ll pull a number out of the air and guess maybe 80% at the point this coronavirus really gets going in the US.

So far, it appears the rate of serious and critical cases caused by COVID-19 is higher than flu, and it is more contagious than flu. Plus we’ll have no vaccine for COVID-19 for at least several months. If all those factors result in as little as 2x the number of serious and critical cases caused by flu, then we’ll need 240% of current available resources to treat everybody.

China has fewer resources (hospital beds, ICU’s, etc.) per person than does the US, and many more people with damaged lungs (smoking, pollution), tho’ I’d expect the latter and likely the former to also show up in their flu mortality numbers, serious case numbers, etc. Any way one looks at it, China ultimately has to decide between the harm and deaths a badly damaged economy will cause, compared to the deaths COVID-19 may cause.
