Some students say colleges not doing enough to combat coronavirus-fueled racism
NBC "News" ^ | February 8, 2020 | By Julian Shen-Berro

A social media post spread through the Barnard College and Columbia University campuses on Manhattan's Upper West Side, quickly garnering hundreds of comments and shares earlier this month.

In it, a Chinese student at Barnard who had self-quarantined herself as a precaution against the coronavirus outbreak was warned by a college official not to leave her dorm room. The student, Sylvia Su, had received an email from a deputy dean at the college, Natalie Friedman, asking why she had not been present when a meal was delivered to her room, warning that "a conduct charge" may be warranted.

Su posted the exchange on Facebook and featured screenshots of the email from Friedman, which was seen as insensitive and discriminatory and prompted an outcry from students.

For Su, the experience was made more difficult by the lack of support from the college.

"All Chinese students, you have family back home that you worry about so much, you have your entire homeland not functioning because of this, everyone is under so much trauma," Su told the campus news site Bwog. "I don't feel any support or any warmth from Barnard on this. Personally, I feel like basically I've been told that I deserve this."

Despite the initial email, Ali Cooke, a spokeswoman for the college, said a student would not be punished for not remaining in isolation. Friedman did not respond to a request for comment.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Is it racism or survival instinct?

This wasn’t a case of “You’re Chinese, you might be infected and should stay in your room”, this was a case of “I might be infected, but I’m neither participating in class nor isolating myself to protect others.”

Weren’t almost all of the tens of thousands of Chinese students back home during the holidays? What did they think would happen when this new plague started exploding in China?

Someone has to explain that their opinion doesn’t matter.

The Public Health Services are among the most “powerful” in the country. If they think this is bad, wait until someone in that Navy looking suit rounds them up and doesn’t let them leave. Not warranted, no questions.

Chinese people always feel they are the targets of discrimination even in normal times. Right now in Chinatown which is in Manhattan the economy is crumbling. People are not going there to shop or eat in the restaurants. People are unemployed and rents are going unpaid. Yet there have been no reported cases of Covid 19 infection in the large Chinese community despite known travel to and from Wusan from Dec 15 -Jan 15 by members of the community and intermingling. Gangs have a big influence on how things are done in Chinatown. To preserve their turfs and the income they make off what’s left of functioning businesses, would not be surprised if the gangs have put out the word that people with flu like symptoms are not to go to hospitals where they would be diagnosed. If Covid 19 is documented in Chinatown, the streets would empty . New York would suffer horribly as well.

We send "students" to college to LEARN, i.e. there are (many, many) things they do not know, let alone UNDERSTAND!

To use an ancient Latin term, they are "ignōrāmus (“we do not know, we are ignorant of”)"

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ignoramus#Etymology_1

I have little hope that current university student bodies will understand this, let alone admit it. However, our noble academic elite leadership, "Dr. So-and-So" et al. should be able to understand that the Students (inmates) do not run the university (asylum).

Oh, so now Asians can be victims of racism - when it suits the Left's purposes. Before, when they were eligible for all of the open spots at universities through superior grades and test scores, they were considered virtual whites and it was OK to refuse them admission. :)

There are several psychological explanations for this. Liberals are very hard to disgust, and they use ONLY empathy and fairness as moral channels. The first is why they hardly care about disease risk, and the latter is why it is more important to seem “fair” than act differently around the potentially infected.

Other variations of this include:
* the HIV positive sperm bank, who cares about the fatherless child who may have a fatal disease ...
* how dare your not want to let HIV positive or TB carrying immigrants into your country, you oppressor
* you’re an evil meanie if you won’t have sex with a transgender, you privileged cisgender lesbian
