China-Led $280 Million Kyrgyzstan Project Abandoned After Protests

BISHKEK—A Chinese company has pulled out of a $280 million project to build a logistics center in Kyrgyzstan after protests by hundreds of locals in a fresh display of anti-Beijing sentiment in Central Asia.

The deal signed during Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to the former Soviet republic last year envisaged construction of warehouses, transport terminals, hotels and other facilities in a free-trade zone near Kyrgyzstan’s border with China.

However, hundreds of locals saw it as a land grab by Kyrgyzstan’s giant neighbor and held a series of protests demanding that the project be canceled.

The joint venture set up by China’s One Lead One (HK) Trading Limited and a Kyrgyzstan partner issued a statement late on Feb. 17, saying that it was impossible to work on a large, long-term project when a part of local population opposes it.

“They have assessed the risks and made a decision,” a spokesman for Kyrgyz Prime Minister Mukhammedkalyi Abilgaziyev said.

Last year hundreds of locals clashed with workers of a Chinese mining company in Kyrgyzstan’s Naryn province–the same region that had been earmarked for the abandoned logistics project—after accusing the miner of poisoning local water supply.

Similar clashes have happened in other parts of Kyrgyzstan.

China won’t admit to it, but it’s hurting.

I saw or read a report last week about China’s big plan to build a highway system for European Trade.

It’s dead in the water, and that might be the real reason for this pullout.

The Cornoavirus has hurt them financially. They weren’t all that rosy before hand due to tariffs.

I didn’t mean to imply the Coronavirus was the reason for the highway plan to fail. I just think it’s one more reason why that it won’t happen.

The problem with the Chinese in these places is that anyone else invest in local development and employs local people.
The Chinese are even bringing their own workers who aren’t even coming to local bars.
They are living in their company towns and don’t buy from locals.

RE: I didn’t mean to imply the Coronavirus was the reason for the highway plan to fail. I just think it’s one more reason why that it won’t happen.

There is also a method to their madness.

This is all part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative — an ambitious programme to connect Asia with Africa and Europe via land and maritime networks along six corridors with the aim of improving regional integration, increasing trade and stimulating economic growth.

The only problem China has ( which probably is NOT a problem but part of a wider plan ) is that a lot of these projects are funded with CHINESE MONEY. Many of these countries that joined the programme have corrupt governments that pocket a lot of these funds and approve the projects without considering their viability.

When they cannot pay back their loans to China, there is a stipulation that they give up control of certain resources to China ( e.g., a port, a railway, a mining resource, etc. ).

Many locals already take note of this and are very unhappy with their country’s resources being taken over by China.

I like that our Leftist idiots on the street get to watch this play out,
our system vs China's.

It would be nice to think of Communism in China ending.

We'll have to see how it plays out.

Will this do it? Not holding my breath.

The Chinese Railway is building new bridges and tracks in Laos and Thailand.

Two weeks ago I was going down the Mekong River by boat and took a photo of a huge Chinese bridge construction project in Laos. I put the photo on my facebook page and it was immediately deleted by the government censors.

Vietnam, while communist, is very anti Chinese except for tourism.

They were proud that there were only 1 million Chinese workers in Vietnam, but many more in Laos and Thialand.
