RealClearEnergy ^ | February 14, 2020 | Paul Steidler

While fuel prices are plummeting, electricity prices are staying stubbornly high. This is bad news particularly for tens of millions of low-income Americans. It also puts an unnecessary drag on economic growth.

Utility regulators and policy makers nationwide, and especially in high natural gas consuming states like Massachusetts, New York and California owe consumers an explanation for high prices.

The answer is that these are Democrat controlled states that oppress the working residents.

I’m sure it has nothing whatsoever to do with regulations requiring expensive and ineffective wind and solar generation. I’m also sure it has nothing to do with mothballing paid for, cheap to operate coal plants.

My utility bills are not too bad but the added $10 a month for Hurricane Michael recovery doesn’t help. I guess they have no choice tho.

Generally it has to do with deferred maintenance costs... A lot of the grid has been neglected... and replacing it is expensive....

I haven’t seen the numbers, but I bet green energy is actually a very small fraction of expenditures.

A great issue for any Republicans who know how to do more than talk about the Trump stock market. The Democrats at the state level are undoing Republican economic gains at the national level.

Another question to ask is:

Since President Donald Trump lowered Corporate Income Taxes from 35% to 21%, please show us the impact of that on the rate charged to your customers.

“New York’s failure to approve new pipelines causes consumers in New York and New England to pay an estimated $2 billion more in energy costs each year, or $233 for a family of four.”

In NY at least, it’s that most of your electric bill represents taxes. Even absurdly high property tax assessments are used as payoffs to local towns.

Then add the over regulation.

They think power prices are high now??? Just wait until all the coal fired plants and nukes are shut down and all of our electricity comes from windmills and solar cells. They ain't seen nothin' yet. Only the richest of the rich will be able to afford electricity then. But most Americans should be ok with that because it's a "climate emergency" and "we must DO SOMETHING!"

The sheep simply don't understand that "doing something" is going to drain their pocketbooks. And the MSM lies to them that it won't cost anything.

Stubborn? The Obama administration made moves intentionally to make electricity rates “necessarily skyrocket.” They did so in order to reduce consumption, as well as to make all their boondoggle subsidized solar companies more attractive in the market.

So, there’s nothing stubborn about it, this was intentional.

I read a year or two ago that at least some people in Quebec (IIRC it was the HydroQuebec webite where I saw this) pay something like 5 cents per killowatt hour for electricity. I pay about 22 cents.

A great issue for any Republican ...

Funny thing. We post criticisms of the DEMs not having a platform that spells out what they would do to help out middle America (other than the freebie trains). But to be honest, the GOP doesn't have much of a public platform either regarding jobs, taxes, illegal immigration, overseas military presences, etc., other than the RINOs being on the cheap labor train. It is all coming down to Trump.

Good observation. The Republicans who learn how to fill their issue void will be the ones who win.

Are you noticing games with property taxes, too?

Perhaps no millage increase, but mysterious home/property value increases?

My Eversource bill here in NH is about half taxes and fees.

The rate is around $.099/KWT. However, whatever the usage rate ends up, my actual bill is about double. Lately it is around $210. Plus this has been a mild winter.

My condo has electric heat,A/C and hot water.I keep heating and A/C bills down by only setting a "comfortable" temp between about 5PM and 10PM. And I forgot to mention that in addition to the 22 cents per kWh I pay there's a monthly fee of about $10.

This is in Eastern Massachusetts.
