Mrs BN & I learned our little Gujarati during a course in Mombasa, Kenya on how to learn unwritten tribal languages. We had to practice the techniques on in a language of which we knew nothing, so we chose Gujarati since the majority of Mombasa shopkeepers were Gujarati.
They all, probably, spoke better English than I and were all so very kind, generous and helpful. Since then, whenever I encounter someone I believe might be Gujarati, I practice my greetings and introductions, all I remember now after 36 years. They are surprised at a white, native American speaking a little Gujarati. And they seem delighted and a bit honored. Good, than was my objective!
How nice!
