Coronavirus: China’s Hubei province orders everybody to stay home
The South China Morning Post ^ | February 16, 2020

The central Chinese province of Hubei escalated its restrictions to contain a coronavirus epidemic on the weekend, ordering the province’s residents - including 24 million people in rural areas - to stay home until further notice.

The orders came as the death toll from the outbreak neared 1,700, including reports of the first death in Europe and Taiwan on the weekend.

Hubei, a province of 58 million, accounts for over 80 per cent of the confirmed cases and 96 per cent of the deaths in China. On Saturday, Hubei reported 1,843 new cases out of a nationwide total of 2,009 and 139 of the 142 new deaths across the country.

The central government has identified Hubei as a key battleground in the war against the epidemic, with authorities imposing unprecedented draconian social controls.

Under new rules introduced on Sunday, each one of the province’s 200,000 or so rural communities will be sealed off with only one guarded entrance.

Similar restrictions will apply to urban residential compounds.

Entry will be restricted to community residents and vehicles, and only one person from each household will be allowed to leave the village every three days to buy essentials.

“In principle, every villager should stay at home. If he really needs to step outside, he has to wear a mask and keep a minimum 1.5 metres from other people,” the regulations say.

“All leisure and entertainment venues shall be shut down and all group activities shall be suspended. Weddings should be postponed, and funeral processes minimised … Visiting other households is strictly prohibited, as is playing mahjong and card games.”

The province also announced that only police vans, ambulances and other specially licensed vehicles will be allowed on roads in Hubei.

350,000 Chinese exchange students are currently enrolled in U.S. universities.

Does this constitute a Trojan Horse for the Grim Reaper ?

Since the virus only started causing problems last November, the Chinese students who have not been back to visit are not likely to be a threat. Our country's lack of proper border security however is a huge threat. We have already had outbreaks of diseases like TB which we once had under control here that can be traced directly back to adequate screening at our borders and points of entry.

Why would they do this??? It's no worse that the flu!
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Their government extended the New Years holiday through this week to the eastern provinces.
............
Hong Kong started shipping last week and is supposed to be completely open for business on Monday including the casinos on Macau.
............
We shall see.....
.............
Economically they will be in a world of hurt as they have mostly emptied existing inventories and have not reordered.
.............
Forget the cruise ships and tourists, that’s done for the year.
.............
Chinese students in the US have a real problem as most of their Visas cause them to return home after the school year.

Those college students have been back in classes right at the one month mark. Hopefully, they’re past the incubation time.

But, but, but....it’s just the flu.

24 million people is about twice the population of New England 14.8 million.

Hubei would be a medium sized country if it was an independent country.

Most of the population lives in the countryside but China is a rapidly urbanizing country.

Makers of online video games, companies that allow telecommuting, and companies that provide the software for telecommuting, are all going to have a banner year.
