Sharpton is just playing an old commie trick. Find a "Republican" to criticize a Republican politician, and then proclaim to the unwashed masses "look here, even Republicans are opposed to (fill in the blank)". We've all seen this strategy used thousands of times. It has worked well in the past, so why not keep playing the card?
