People returning to Beijing under quarantine as China struggles to pick up economy

The Chinese capital Beijing on Friday imposed a 14-day self-quarantine on people returning to the city from holidays to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, and threatened to punish those who failed to comply.

It was not immediately clear how the restriction, relayed by the official Beijing Daily newspaper, would be enforced, or whether it would apply to non-residents of Beijing or foreigners arriving from abroad.

In cities such as Beijing and the business hub Shanghai, streets and subways remain largely deserted with many shops and restaurants empty or shut.

Government employee Jin Yang, 28, made it to his Beijing office but found it “anything but normal.”

Canteen lunches are banned in favor of boxed meals eaten at desks. Meetings are held online, not in person. Employees must wear masks all day and report their temperature twice a day as fever is one of the virus’ main symptoms.

“From now on, all those who have returned to Beijing should stay at home or submit to group observation for 14 days after arriving,” read the notice from Beijing’s virus prevention working group cited by the Beijing Daily.

“Those who refuse to accept home or centralized observation and other prevention and control measures will be held accountable under law,” it said.

“Those who refuse to accept home or centralized observation and other prevention and control measures will be held accountable under law,”

I think it goes without saying that being "held accountable under law" in China is something to avoid.

You mean it's not at all like when AG Barr says he's outraged and people will be held accountable? Because anyone Barr says that about has nothing at all to worry about.

I don’t think we have seen even close to all of this.

Good luck with that...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Vietnam, where I live now, was originally going to re-open elementary schools next week.

Sometime after announcing that earlier this week, they later backtracked and said “not open next week”.

Just saying.

Probably not. I certainly hope they are getting a handle on this virus, but my confidence that they will isn’t very high. If we see more major population centers overwhelmed like Wuhan, Xi is likely done. But he won’t go without there being a lot of blood spilled.

I heard some interview on the radio. The person said their factory usually has 4,000 workers on a shift. She said there were about a dozen there. And even if the workers do come back while there is still a threat of the virus, they have to spend 14 days in quarantine before they can come back to work.
