Delta Air Lines, the world's second-largest carrier, announced plans Friday to mount an ambitious 10-year strategy during which it will spend at least $1 billion and become the world's first carbon-neutral airline.
The Atlanta-based carrier said it will launch the effort next month, which will include investments in green air travel technologies, methods to reduce carbon emissions and waste and development of projects to mitigate emissions it does produce.
"There is no substitute for the power that travel has to connect people, which our world needs today more than ever before," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement. "It is our responsibility to deliver on our promise to bring people together and ensure the utmost care for our environment.
"The time is now to accelerate our investments and establish an ambitious commitment that the entire Delta team will deliver."
Delta said its plans also include cutting its use of jet fuel, investing in forestry, restoring wetlands, recapturing soil, building green coalitions with employees and suppliers.
Delta is the latest major company to mount an ambitious environmental strategy. Teenage climate change activist Greta Thurnberg gained widespread fame last year when she refused to fly to the United States for a climate change summit -- not wanting to contribute to the industry's carbon output -- and sailed instead.

Today, I unveiled my plan to become free of Delta travel within 10 years.
Intel tried this nonsense in Oregon.
They took their eyes off the ball and lost lead they had on the world.
This will NOT go well for Delta.
and what type of engine will they use to propel their aircraft? Some PC environmentalist at Delta had another knee-jerk reaction, IMO
Get ready for flights with piss-poor air conditioning if you fly on the new "green" Delta.
[[and what type of engine will they use to propel their aircraft?]]
Don’t be silly- of course they will use a perpetual motion machine thingy to propel the giant aircraft through space-
They could buy all of Boeing’s 737’s and not fly them.
They should put solar panels on the plane’s wings, and then invite their favorite environmentalists for a test flight.... ;-)
Wow, this mass insanity is spreading to board rooms. Wow, just wow.
Hear ye, hear ye.
Sell Delta stock. Post haste.
Not flying in an electric airplane nope, nope.
[[and what type of engine will they use to propel their aircraft?]]
Or, solar panels-
Delta’s Board of Directors needs to lead by example—sell all their homes, private planes, vehicles—and live in tents.
How dare they do anything else?
the company will be gone in short order I believe.
So it won’t be safe to fly Delta.
Yeah I don’t want to fly on an airline that is willfully stupid!
They can start immediately by just grounding all their planes.
